Captain America Fights Suicide

Featured in the last issue of I Am An Avenger #5, but also available for free on Marvel's digital app, the 11 page Captain America: A Little Help deals with the topic of suicide.  With a story written by psychologist Tim Ursiny, and pencils by Nick Dragotta, this is an attempt by Marvel to do just a bit of public service work. If there was ever a character who would be and is perfect for the job, it's Captain America, obviously.  In the back of the issue, readers will find the number for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.

Says Tom Brevoort, new SVP of Publishing for Marvel, "If even one person calls this number instead of doing something very tragic, we know that means we succeeded."

Well played, Marvel.  I can't imagine it won't go over better than Superman's run in with a jumper back in Superman #701.

Since this is all about Disney now, instead of just Marvel, it was featured in Yahoo! Finance.

  1. As an advocate for suicide prevention I would like to thank Marvel for creating this and you guys here at iFanboy for posting it. As this is a serious mental and public health issue every bit helps in the fight. Thank you.

  2. Cudos Marvel.

  3. @piscespaul  Agreed. I would like to see more of these types one-shots done. Wether they’re written by master writers or not. As Paul said: every bit helps.

  4. This is great. Nice to see MArvel tackling a social issue like this. Hope to see more of it from them

  5. (clapping)

  6. Good to see. Well done Marvel.

  7. Clap to DC for doing it first w/ Superman.

  8. man, i read this on marvel digital just now.  very touching, and pretty well done.  broke my heart.

  9. Even though they weren’t “very special episodes” supes did this twice before JMS in All Star Superman and JSA. And didn’t robin have that one issue with the kid on the roof and tim talked him down? I guess the most important thing to remember is that there can never be too many of these type books.
