C2E2 2011: UNCANNY X-FORCE: The Dark Angel Saga

This evening at Chicago's C2E2, Marvel provided further details about the future of the X-line during a Welcome to the X-Men panel.

Tops on the list? Further details on Uncanny X-Force and the upcoming Dark Angel Saga. And it all ties in to Age of Apocalypse.

"Forced into the Age of Apocalypse, Uncanny X-Force teams up with the unlikeliest of allies—Dark Beast—to find a way to save the corrupted soul of Angel! In their journey through this hellish alternate dimension, the all-new and all-deadly covert team of mutants must find the one thing that can release the sinister Archangel’s stranglehold on Warren’s mind and body. And if they fail, the very man they’re trying to save may turn out to be the greatest threat they’ll ever face…"

The writing's been on the wall since the title picked up the adjective. Angel's going dark. No matter what Psylocke does to keep his inner demons in check. Is she fired as team therapist? Is the relationship on the rocks? Even greater danger?

Prologue in May with issue #10. Official start to the saga with June's #11.

Whaddya say, kiddos? You like some AoA in your X-Force? Happy to see Logan slugging Sabretooth again?

You like your Seast and Angel served dark?

  1. I have mixed feelings about this. I know the tendency in the 90s was to turn everyone dark and gritty, but I always hated Angel as this tortured soul. To me, Warren was the guy in the clouds, flying for the sheer joy of life he felt. I loved the way he was written in Defenders. He was a guy who had everything: money, fame, a beautiful woman, a career as a super-hero, a kick ass mansion in the mountains, a hugely successful corporation, and the gift of flight that let his joy bring him into the sky. He was the ultimate playboy who loved life. I miss that Warren.

  2. Maybe we’ll get some sort of resolution to the Angel/Archangel thing. I’m loving that they are going back to the AoA. It’s only fitting that Dark Beast be involved, since he is from that reality. Also I find it amusing because Beast detest X-Force and what they stand for. I still would like to see an X-Force made up of all former Apocaylpse horsemen. For example, Archangel, Wolverine, Gambit, Sunfire, Polaris, and Caliban.

  3. As one of the many people who absolutely loved the Age of Apocalypse I am glad to see it finally revisited by a writer of this caliber.  Hopefully it will avoid the curse of bad stories that have plagued most AoA revists.

  4. Hrmm… so AoA is solidly an alternate universe they can do to now and not an accidental change to the main timeline anymore? That seems odd.

  5. @PraxJarvin  It is an accidential change but once created it exist as a tangent…. I think.

  6. This looks great, and I love where Remender is taking Uncanny X-Force. Only one thing makes me nervous: Billy Tan doing some of the upcoming art.

  7. Nightcrawlers back already?

  8. @OnASunday  That’s the AoA Night Crawler, complete with the face tat and sword.

  9. Did they ever solve that Gambit reverting back to the horsemen thing? I remember that Magik mini during Second Coming had it as a plot point.

This looks cool but I also miss Defenders era Angel. Hopefully this solves the brooding once and for all.

  10. I think how I like my “Seast” is noones busisness but my own hahahaha

  11. Having read this and the Flashpoint article just cemented how i feel about the big 2. I don’t feel like I’ve seen much that’s fresh or new in ages. Uncanny X Force was a joy to begin with but this suggests its falling into laziness. Old concepts given a weak new coat of paint and marketed as new. I think I have Big 2 fatigue.

  12. @Selfstyler  I’m sure its hard coming up with something completely new after all these years of creating stories. It doesn’t bother me as much because the creative teams make it interesting, for the most part, for me even though it could be a retooled or recycled story.

  13. I’ve liked Uncanny X-Force, but I’ve never really gotten into the X-Universe before now. I’ll be reading this one. I mean, I’m assuming Rick Remender is on as writer, so it should be exciting at least.

  14. @Selfstyler. While you are not wrong, I would caution against falling into a “Simpsons did it” type mentality.

  15. So… what does all this X-Men talk have to do with Jessica Alba?

  16. @WonderManFan  well played sir

  17. I hope Jerome Opena is back on

  18. I am loving this book and hope Opena is back.  It seems like the team has to make big moral choices every issue and that every choice matters.  Keep it coming!

  19. Awesome hopefully he doesn’t do the predictable evil phoenix destroying everything.  Actually use her for something good.
