Brightest Day Brings Changes For The Green Lantern Books

Green Lantern Corps by Ardian SyrafThe DC Blog announced that with the coming of Brightest Day, there are going to be a bit of a shake-up with the Green Lantern famly of books.

Green Lantern Corps will be helmed by the new creative team of writer Tony Bedard and artist Ardian Syaf. The book will focus on Green Lanterns Kyle Rayner, John Stewart and Ganthet. That's Syaf's work to the left.

Former Green Lantern Corps writer Peter J. Tomasi will be writing a new Green Lantern book (this is how you know you've got a hot property, when you you get another book) called Green Lantern: Emerald Warriors, which will feature the adventures of Green Lanterns Guy Gardner and Kilowog. Tomasi will be joined by artist Fernando Pasarin.

What does all of this mean? Well, Green Lantern books have been sellihg like gang-busters during Blackest Night and DC is hoping to keep that good feeling going during Brightest Day by adding a third Green Lantern book. Will this move dilute the brand or add to it? We'll find out soon enough.

I am really glad that Peter J. Tomasi is staying in the Green Lantern family, though I am sad that they are breaking up the Kyle Rayner/Guy Gardner dynamic which had grown into something really interesting over the years. As for Tony Bedard, he's not really a name that thrills me. I don't think I've ever read anything that he's written that I've loved. That doesn't mean he's not capable of it or that it won't happen, it just means that I don't see his name and get excited. People wo read his book R.E.B.E.L.S. really seem to like it, though, so we'll see. DC would clearly really like Bedard to hit it big.

As much as I've enjoyed Blackest Night and the epic war that has unfolded in the Green Lantern books it will be nice to slow it down a bit and spend some time with these characters that have gone through so much in the last year.

  1. Hurm, I really need to catch up on my general DC comics, Im too far behind :/

  2. Fantastic news! Although I am a bit wary, like you conor, about Tony Bedard talking over GLC. I hear great things about REBELS but I never really read anything he’s done. You know what counters the unknown of Bedard? Ardian Syf! He is a nice, new artist DC found using him for the BN Batman and Phantom Stranger comics. I even said in the review for Phantom Stranger he would work perfectly for GLC.

The new title, Emerald Warriors, sounds really interesting. Guy Gardner and Kilowog might be a great team up for a book. Although I would have loved to see it a Gardner/Rayner book. Still it’s great news all around.

  3. I love the idea of more Kilowog. The rest of the news has me wondering.

  4. Hal book. Guy book. Kyle/John book. Everyone wins!!!

I LOVE YOU SO HARD DC.

  5. I just got GLC on DC Direct, this new direction has me a bit concerned but I suppose it was foolish of me to think that everything would stay the same after the events of Blackest Night.  If GLC centers around rebuilding the Corps that could be cool.

  6. REBELS is awesome and Bedard has shown he can write a great cosmic team book. Looking forward to it.

  7. good job with ideas for this round

  8. I’ve been reading both Green Lantern books since they were relaunched, but I’m really not sure I want to read 4 Lantern-related books

  9. I’m with Tom on this one. If REBELS is any kind of indication, Bedard’s a perfect fit for the Corps. This is great news.

    In closing, READ REBELS!!!

  10. So let me make sure I understand this correctly, Ganthet’s back with the Green Lanterns? As for the books, I’m not sure if I’ve reached capacity with the lantern universe but this might be pushing it

  11. Oh very good! I’ve liked Tony Bedard since he took over Exiles a few years back and he wrote one of the better arcs for that series (World Tour, in which the team visit popular alternate universes like Heroes Reborn, AoA, 2099 and more) and I enjoyed his BN crossover issues of REBELS enough to pick up the trade. His Blackest Night Adv. Comics was actually a decent read, too. So color me excited.

  12. Grean Lantern is one of my favorite books going so this has me very excited. I will definelty Tomasi to his new book, and try out Bedard on Corps. I have also heard great things about Rebels, and actually enjoyed the BN crossover. I have been meaning to pick up the first trade, but haven’t got around to it. It’s on my to do list, definetly.

  13. Guy and Kilowog? Should’ve been Guy and G’Nort.

  14. REBELS is awesome, and I was actually thinking of not reading GLC anymore as they’d switched to hardcovers, so I’ll always be behind, but with Bedard on it, I just may stick around.

  15. Where is Gleason going? He has been doing the Corps for approximately forever. New pastures or will he be shifted to the prime Lantern book? He does great with diverse piles of aliens, which is why he was so perfect for the Corps.

I jumped on REBELS after the Blackest Night crossover, so I like Bedard’s work there. Nothing else I have run into by him has really hit me though…

  16. Just wanted to throw in my support for REBELS…more people should be checking it out!

Not sure if I’ll read these GL books, though. Trying to trim my single issue intake and if I want to read Brightest Day I may not have room for many other DC books.

  17. @JimBill4 – Gleason is working on Brightest Day.

  18. …sorry but nothing really exciting

  19. After a check of Tony Bedard’s bibliography. I’m not to sure of him on GLC. The stuff I have read is ok to bad.  At least he has some time with Kyle Rayner via Countdown. Oh it hurts to say that.  Also not a Jon Stewart fan.

  20. that makes ganthet look badass

  21. Thanks, Paul. Now I know. Add requisite G.I.Joe reference here.

  22. This sounds promising.

  23. Even though I’m not really familiar with his works, I’ll give Bedard the benefit of the doubt and give it a shot.  I just hope it doesn’t make GL books stagnant – they’re on too much of a roll as of late.

  24. Damn, I would’ve liked to see a Guy & John book, since they’re my favorite Lanterns.

Of course, I don’t know if I’m gonna continue with GL or GLC after Blackest Night anyway. *shrug*

  25. Ya know when you first see an image wrong and it sticks w/ you (like the last issue of Old Man Logan looked to me like goatse)? Well here, I can’t un-see John Stewart wearing what looked to me like green lipstick.

  26. The question needs to be asked, what am I dropping to add this book. Are they cancelling REBELS?

Im really excited, I can’t get enough of Green Lantern since Rebirth.

  27. Is GLC Tomasi’s only book now that The Mighty is over?  That guy can never do too many books.

  28. Currently yeah, but soon he’ll be writing Brightest Day and this new Lantern book.

  29. I guess something happens to the Blue Lantern Corps =/

  30. Tony Bedard is the shiznight! REBELS is the best book that not enough people are reading.

  31. Hopefully we’ll see John Stewart some more.

  32. I just noticed that Ganthet is wearing his Ringbearer uniform, not his Guardian uniform. This could cause some interesting stories; the rebel Guardian coming back and having to serve under the others.  Then again, Hal Jordan’s group is being referred to as "The New Guardians" so maybe he takes over?

    @Mangaman

Not necessarily. The Blue Lantern Corps was was around before the Guardians joined them. Besides, there’s always Sayd, or Saint Walker if you go by my "New Guardians" theory.

  33. I just don’t have the attention-span to play catch up with DC continuity. I hope I can follow without having to wiki storylines to play catchup.

  34. I will wait for the softcovers like I’ve been doing with everything GL except Blackest Night.  When it comes to buying issues, the Bat-books already got both hands in my wallet and they’re not letting go without a fight with the dark knight.

  35. As someone who has been both books since Rebirth, this is great news to hear.

  36. REBELS has been fantastic! I think Bedard is really going to flourish on a GL book. Sad to see Gleason go, but i liked Syf’s work on Blackest Night: Batman, so this news sounds very promising to me. Not sure if I’ll be picking up the "Emerald Warriors" book, I really like Tomasi, but I don’t want to burn myself out on GL.

  37. Hey conor if I can just say something. It’s Sayf and not Syf. It’s okay I didnt notice it either until someone corrected me on twitter.

  38. At first, I was wary, but on second thought, it could turn out well. Tomasi is solid and Pasarin did some solid work on JSA. Bedard had me with the Exiles run and Syaf did some solid work on Captain Britain. I’ll stick with the titles, but they still need to prove themselves, unfortunately.

  39. I would totally buy a Guy Gardner/Kilowog book if I had the money to add another book to my pull list. Hey, now that they have three monthly titles, Green Lantern has ALMOST as many monthly books as Deadpool!

  40. Im excited to see the new book, but more excited on the new creative team on GLC. I Dropped that a while ago and now I have a reason to buy again

  41. I’ll echo the sentiment about Bedard being great on REBELS. I’m surprised you don’t read it, Conor – I think it’d be right up your alley.

  42. Disappointed in this. DC are moving Tomasi off the book that has been the making of him, replacing him with a writer who can at best be described as unreliable and uneven in quality terms, and breaking up the Kyle/Guy partnership. It’s a step back imho, I’ll stick with them for the first arc but they better have something special up their sleeves.

  43. I guess another addition to my pull list

  44. i never liked hal as gl..always liked guy gardner.so they got another $2.99 out my wallet.cause he was the only reason i got the corps..

  45. I think I’ll just stick with the main GL book then, I’m not interested in 2 Corps books, and I can’t stand Guy Gardner anyway.
