Another Look at Captain America: The First Avenger

You may remember, from earlier today, that Geoff Boucher of the LA Times gets all the best stories. In addition to his X-Men stuff, he's got this exclusive shot of Chris Evans in costume from Captain America: The First Avenger.

So there he is, running, from Jerry I would assume.

Director Joe Johnston is predictably optimistic about this film stating, "I watched the movie for the first time a few days ago and I just looked at the first cut and there is so much entertainment value — it’s just flat-out fun to watch,” and “Maybe I’m somewhat biased — I was there [when we made it] — but, seriously, it’s funny, it’s exciting and there’s great visual effects.  The movie is going to be something more than people are expecting. This movie is going to surprise some people. It is the origin story of Captain America but it is also something rare — it’s a period superhero film but there’s great action in it. You don’t normally think of guys driving around in 1939 sedans in an action film but there are some great action beats in it. It’s just a helluva lot of fun to watch."

On lead actor Chris Evans, he says, "All actors bring something unexpected to the role because they have to translate what’s on the page and make a real character out of the black-and-white text that’s there in the script. I hadn’t worked with Chris Evans and I wasn’t really that familiar with his work and I  didn’t know what to expect. I was blown away by the subtlety that he brought to the role.  It was really exciting to watch him. He added layers to the character that were not on the page and layers that were not in the comic books. He made Steve Rogers into a real flesh-and-blood character and it was fantastic to watch."

Look for the movie out on July 22. As opposed to July 4, which would have been… anyway, let's not get in to it.

Comments

  1. The L.A. had this pic a few days ago, and in the comments some said something to effect of what third world country is he running off to beat up now. I never wanted to punch my computer harder.

  2. Wait. There’s going to be RUNNING in this movie too!? Man I’m getting even MORE excited now! Does anyone else believe they are going to go all out and put jumping in it as well? That would be crazy!

Seriously tho. Finish the damn trailer already!

  3. Hey! Where are my Buccaneer boots!!!!!!!

  4. This looks amazing. Really, can not wait for this.

  5. I wonder if they are pushing to get photos out of Evans in costume before the Avengers starts filming. I will assume that Evans will probably be the only one to get a new costume in the flick and Marvel probably doesn’t want any spy photos of the new costume before anyone even sees the old one.

  6. Hooray. While all you boys are still staring at January Jones I can revel in Chris Evans. Not that this picture is sexy, but you know. The general thought of him as a superhero (one who doesn’t get cgi-ified when he uses his powers.)

This movie should be fun times.

  7. Do they need to change the costume for Avengers? I think this would look great next to Thor and Iron Man, bulky belt and all.

  8. I’m so happy this is a period piece, and we get to see Cap in WWII. This means we can skip about an hour of “mild-mannered weakling intro -> super serum -> training montage -> WWII exploits montage -> mission gone wrong/accident -> cryogenic preservation -> man-out-of-time” before getting to the meat of the story.
The idea of vintage cars, men in hats, tommy-guns and late-night parachuting sounds good to me.

I was very young when I watched the Lynda Carter Wonder Woman show on TV, but I remember that the WWII episodes were great, and the current-day episodes were not as good. It seems to me that patriotic character like these work better in a historical context.

  9. Avatar photo Paul Montgomery (@fuzzytypewriter) says:

Not a complaint, but I’m getting a Lobster Johnson vibe. Love it.

  10. What the…? Why is Captain America using a hand rail? You’re a man of action, Cap! Just run, man!

I’m very much looking forward to this flick.

  11. A man of action AND caution…that’s why he is Captain America.

  12. Captain America says, “Always remember workplace safety! When running from evil Nazi scientists, be sure to always use the handrail.” Looks pretty good, actually. I like that the white has a bit of dirtiness to it. As if he’d seen action.

  13. @swag well considering howard stark designs this costume (apparently) I would see Tony, being the man he is, trying to develop something modern for Cap to wera, you know to kinda say hey i’m jsut as good as my father.

  14. Hey you get frozen for over 50 years and see if your hips aren’t brittle.

  15. good news is you shouldnt have to wait to long to see at least some action! Trailer was announced to play during the Super Bowl(and im sure online or in theaters shortly thereafter)….for those of us that are football fans at least!

  16. Something about this image looks odd and I can’t put my finger on it.

It kinda like digitized in some capacity but also can’t say specifically how. But also it’s just a weird pose to see Cap in too.

  17. @Unoob    Do you know how hard it is to run in buccaneer boots? Believe me, I’ve tried. Just ask any pirate, it’s no walk on the beach.

I can’t WAIT for this!!!! Gotta see a trailer soon. If they can capture, or hopefully surpass, the jaw-dropping awesomeness and excitement of the beginning segment in the Ultimate Avengers animated movie, we’re in for a wild ride.

  18. Run, Forrest, Run!

  19. RunnIng, awesome. Also, a trained professional always uses handrails. Safety first. And I’m drunk.

  20. @Troy  Hey! A reason to watch the Super Bowl! Cool, because I needed a reason because I know I won’t care about  either team in it.

  21. @neums – you already know which teams will be in the Super Bowl?? Cool! Spoil it for me, please!!

  22. Put “Honda” under the wings on his helmet and you’ve got their motorcycle logo.
