2013 Harvey Award Nominations

HARVEY-LOGO-2010-brownHere we are once again in comic convention and award season. It’s a blessed time. A sweaty time. This morning sees the announcement of the Harvey Award nominations, named for the legendary Harvey Kurtzman. Selected by comics industry professionals, the winners will be announced during Baltimore Comic Con at the annual banquet on Saturday, September 7th.

We’re not entirely sure how a Best Colorist list could be compiled without breakout talent Jordie Bellaire’s name on it. Come to think of it, perennial favorite Dave Stewart is absent as well. Those best continuing series, writer and artists categories look pretty spot on though, including a number of iFanboy editorial and community favorites like Saga, Batman, Daredevil, Hawkeye and Locke & Key represented. The breakout star on the list is certainly Image Comics’ Revival by Tim Seeley and Mike Norton with covers by Jenny Frison.

Comments

  1. Man, best writer is a real tough one this year. I would say Waid over Vaughn though.

    • I really hate to say it, but still think that Vaughn is extremely overrated. People act like he is the new Alan Moore.
Y the last man was good, no doubt about that, even if I think it lost a lot of steam around the middle.
But apart from that? I found Runaways pretty mediocre, Ex Machina had a great concept but did nothing with it that made me go wow, his Marvel and DC stuff was hideous and Saga isn’t for me, since I find the level of porn in it pretty gratuitous (not because there is homosexual stuff in there, but because it is pornographic).
I really don’t get it, i am not saying he is bad or anything, but I just don’t get the extreme love for his work. I think everyone that is with him nominated for best writer does a lot better work (apart from Seeley, who I don’t know well outside from Revival, which is great so far).
Personaly I would give it to Joe Hill. As much as I love Waids Daredevil, Fractions Hawkeye and Snyders Batman (which is to say A LOT! All three are great!), I think Joe Hills writing on that series is a notch above almost everything thats getting published in comics right now. Locke&Key is really a masterpiece. I hope Hill stays with comics for quite a bit, even if I also loved all his books so far (haven’t finished Nos4a2 yet)!

  2. I’d like to know how much these awards actually matter to the companies because you’d think DC’d put up more of a fight to get nominated if they did.

Also they’re crazy for ignoring Jordie Bellaire.

  3. Best Writer is a pretty packed category. Some tough competition. Nice to see Batman and Saga slugging it out in more than a couple of categories.

I agree that Bellaire and Stewart’s absence is a crime.

  4. Wow, a lot of nominations for Revival. I dropped that after about 5 issues but maybe I need to pick it back up.

    • Yep right when it gets good you dropped it. I was on the verge of doing the same but it’s actually got real good.

    • Hmmm, might have to pick it back up. I could tell it was a slow burn building to something but I just lost patience. Maybe I’ll grab the first trade this Wednesday.

  5. Really hoping Saga cleans up here, they deserve it. It’s been such a refreshing comic.

  6. These types of things are always hard to compile. Is there an application process that needs to happen for people to get considered? People I would’ve liked to have seen on this list is Dean White and Jordie Bellaire for sure on colors. For covers I’ve really enjoyed the unique works that Mark Brooks has been doing on Defenders and Mike Del Mundo on X-Men Legacy. I know we can’t get everyone in there but those are a few people that I would have liked to see recognized.

Also, for online work http://jl8comic.tumblr.com/ is adorable and demands attention, I just wonder about the grey area of using a DC property and all of that.

    • The idea of posting your list is cool, also some of these I could only choose what I knew, so there’s a reason I’m not a judge. 🙂

  7. I guess I’m happy to see Saga, Hawkeye and Batman up there for the awards, as they’re all on my reading list.

However, I’ve dropped Batman as I wasn’t really that impressed.

Hawkeye is OK – I’ve read the first trade and liked it but it wasn’t knock-my-socks-off like Iron Fist was a few years ago.

Just read the 2nd trade of Saga, and while I like it, and it might be really good – I don’t think its the greatest thing since sliced bread. Its also got one of the most annoying main characters in it – Alana. I guess both parents live in this thing, based on the narration… but man I wish she would get blasted.

  8. So basically Hawkeye, Batman, Daredevil and Saga are going to win something.

  9. Interesting how FATALE (one of my favs) was all over the Eisner and yet nowhere whatsoever in the Harvey.

This award also seems to go a little more main stream with nominations than the Eisner.

    • Well, the Harveys are really the industry folks doing the nominating and voting:

“Nominations for the Harvey Awards are selected exclusively by creators – those who write, draw, ink, letter, color,
design, edit, or are otherwise involved in a creative capacity in the comics field. ”

“Voting is open to anyone professionally involved in a creative capacity within the comics field. ”

Whereas the Eisners are nominated by a committee which, this year, was composed mostly of indie-leaning people and retailers. So I am not surprised by this.

  10. Congrats to Becky Cloonan for having two books in the Best Single Issue category.

  11. Really happy to see so many Revival nominations. I think it’s one of the five best comics being made, yet no one talks about it.

  12. My votes:

    BEST LETTERER
____ Chris Ware, BUILDING STORIES, Pantheon

BEST COLORIST (Laura Alred was a close one for me)
____ Matt Hollingsworth, HAWKEYE, Marvel Comics

  13. It’s hard to argue with any of these nominations, but I agree that Bellaire’s absence is surprising. I’d also have liked to see Javier Rodriguez get a nod. Great to see Locke and Key get love, but I think Gabriel Rodriguez deserved to be on the best artist list–I assume a tie lead to six writers getting nominated but only five artists. Oh yeah and since I’m just listing people I want to see nominated, I wish Dave Johnson would get some love for his cover work, as well as Hickman for the AMAZING Manhattan Projects covers.

  14. I really regret not jumping on Revival when it dropped. I hear theres a deluxe hardcover being released in October so I might start with that.

  15. Saga will most likely sweep each of their categories

  16. I wonder how this nomination list would compare to the iFanny noms.

  17. Wow, tough list… If one thing, I do agree that Vaughn is very overrated. Y was great, Runaways was fun, but Saga is just plain pornographic. The story is decent and the art is beautiful, but like Millar he seems to be tossing out all sorts of fetishistic shit. I don’t understand it… And I’m surprised not to see J.H. Williams anywhere on the list! His art, if anything, has been consistently lush and beautiful! Definitely hope Snyder, Fraction, Glapion, and Aja get something! 🙂

  19. Batman #12?
    BATMAN #12!?!?

    Not Batman #1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 11, or 13?

    • Yeah, that weirded me out. 12 was the Harper issue, right? I definitely would have nominated 13.

    • Recall the subject matter in #12 and it starts to make sense. Comics, politics, and society being what they are today.

    • I’m guessing they skipped #13 as it was part of a larger story, and #12 was more self contained (the category is “Single Issue” after all). Still, as much as I love Snyder, the best single issue Batman story of the year, in my opinion, was Tomasi’s Batman and Robin Requiem issue . . .

  20. Also, to all those using “porn” and “Saga” in the same sentence, have any of you ever seen porn?

    • I can’t recall his name, but did you actually SEE the introduction page of the tv-head dude? Where he’s with his wife? Tell me that’s not pornographic.

    • It’s not pornographic.

    • @Nightwing: They put more graphic imagery on HBO these days. The first scene on Sextillion makes a stronger case, but even then — it’s explicit imagery, but not designed to appeal to prurient interests (which I think is still part of the legal definition of porn).

    • I definitely wouldn’t consider it pornographic either. Nudity or sex scene are not terms that are always interchangeable with pornography.

    • For me, what constitutes porn would be a comic about sexual encounters and containing several pages (5 – 7 at least) where each panel is a sex act of some kind. SAGA doesn’t qualify as such even with the issue on the planet Sextillion.

  21. @KenOchalek, yes I think you’re right. In legal terms, the depiction of sexually explicit images has to have the intent of arousing sexual interest for it to be pornography. I don’t think Ms. Staples was trying to titillate anyone when she drew that panel.

But it’s fine if someone (@Nightwing97) is averse to sexually explicit imagery or pornography. Different strokes. Pun intended.

    • Look, I’m no prude, but I just didn’t see how the excessive imagery contributed to the story. A lot of the stuff that was shown could have been omitted or at least implied. Ms. Staples art is beautiful, and it’s not like she writes the stuff. And I guess I was being a little loose with my terminology; I just think that based on the content, it shouldn’t be nominated.

    • Okay, thanks for clarifying. Admittedly, I’m not completely sure what was going on with that panel. It may have been a flight-of-fancy flourish on Vaughan’s part with no particular purpose, or it may pay off in some manner down the road. In either case, for me personally, my mild confusion over that particular panel doesn’t detract from the overall effect of Vaughan and Staple’s remarkable storytelling over the past 12 issues of Saga. It’s the title that I anticipate and enjoy the most, at present. But there’s no accounting for taste, so not everyone has to like it.

    • I like Saga, I like porn. I don’t really like comic-porn – you know the stuff I mean. I also don’t get offended by language, adult situations, etc.

That said, while reading Saga, some of the vulgarity and sex seem to stick out like a sore thumb. They don’t really enriched story much in my mind. A lot of it comes of as pretty childish, even.

  22. I really like Saga but I’m starting to think people overrate it. Prophet is also a great Sci-Fi book and gets much less hype, BKV does better characters but many other Sci-Fi aspects are done better by Prophet.

All the books writers and artists nominated are great to say Saga should sweep is a bit much.

It is nice to see Scott Snyder get nominated as I feel like he has been snubbed at times, same.

  23. Like with the Eisner’s, my main question is where is Mind MGMT? It is one of the most original comics I’ve seen in a while, and deserves far wider recognition.

Also, Nowhere Men deserved some nods, as does Young Avengers (assuming it started in time to qualify).

Still, over all a pretty decent list. I should really get around to reading that first trade of Saga. Maybe this is the week . . .

  24. Is there no category that Punk Rock Jesus would fall under? It was so well written and illustrated. Definitely in the top 3 books I have read this year.

  25. I’m surprised there is no love for Javier Rodriguez as colorist. He is so damn integral to Daredevil since the first issue and not having a nomination for him seems crazy. Also, I would have loved to see Meredith Gran get’s some love for Humor with Octopus Pie (or Online Comic). That series never fails to make me laugh.
