200 Words with Paul Dini #31 – Tex-Rated

September 18, 2008

Some years back several artists and I crowded into the tiny screening room of a now-defunct animation studio to watch a selection of Tex Avery’s funniest cartoons. We were halfway through Red’s dance number in Wild And Wolfy when in strode legendary gagman and slumming animation writer B. Buddy Bixley.

“What the hell are you watching, pornos?” Buddy smirked. He glanced at Preston Blair’s superbly animated dancing cowgirl and barked: “Holy crap, it is porno!” I explained we were doing research for the new series of Droopy cartoons Buddy was story editing. It was a long shot, but we were hoping to infuse these new shorts with a bit of Tex’s comedic spirit. Buddy however, was fixated solely on Red. “She could do me.” Buddy mumbled. “Oh yeah. She could totally do me.” Then he whirled on us, snapping, “I don’t wanna see you geeks putting that shit in the cartoons. Keep it clean, no girls, only animal people. Last thing I need is a call from the censor because you tried to animate some goddamn strip tease.” He glanced back at the screen and added: “That shit’s dead, you hear? Dead.”

Ten months later, so were Buddy’s Droopy cartoons.
