If you want to try Evangelion out, there are two new movies that were just released, Evangelion1.0 and Evangelion 2.0. It's a re-telling of the series with a lot of tweaks and new story twists. So far, it's looking to be like a reboot and continuation of the first series, JJ Abrams Styar Trek-style.
@Molly, perhaps you can make a separate article on which Gundam series one could try, since there are a lot of series.
I read both Manga and Western comics, and most of the time, when I see a western superhero dressed up in a book with manga art style, I somehow unconsciously just dismiss it and move on. When I look for Manga, it's because I want to read something totally different from my regular western books.
As an added tidbit:
During last year's Free Comic Book Day, the artist for Wolverine: Prodigal Son, Wilson Tortosa was doing signings and sketches at our shop. He was dressed almost like Wolverine was in the cover of that book. By far the only artist I know of who cosplays as one of the characters he draws at an event.
After re-reading the comics I bought and loved in the 90's (examples being WildC.A.T.s volume 1, Batman: Knightfall, Death of Superman), I found that they weren't as good as I always beleived them to be. Some of them still hold up, some of them don't. Does that mean that they were bad stories? No. I have learned to shift my expectations a little whenever I pick up something to read that's from the old days like the Showcases and Essentials. That way, I enjoy it for what it is, without having to compare it to the standards of the books I read today.
Great article Tom. Well done.
