March 30, 2021 9:18 am I always had to go back and flip through the back issues to remind myself of where we left off. Reminds me of reading Planetary in issues. Same situation with the drawn out release schedule and heavy story with unforgiving recap structure in the issue. This reminds me of the Stan Lee mantra and why it's valuable even to us vets "Every comic is someone's first." I wish that editorial boxes never fell out of favor. I understand why they did, but they were so helpful. Obviously this is an issue that disappears in the compilation format but a book has to make it that far first.
March 28, 2021 12:12 pm Low did finally finish and it's I think one of my favorite thing Remender has done. It was handicapped by it's hiatuses though. Also it's a real heavy book but I do love it's ultimate message.
March 4, 2021 11:16 am In my head there was a record scratch. Wait whales had hooves? Were they as big then as modern whales? This all sounds terrifying.
February 26, 2021 2:25 pm I get why Josh jumped off toward the end of the last season of Lost. I'm not a huge fan of that last season. In contrast the penultimate season I really loved and in total I would put watching Lost up there with the best TV experiences I've had. There are episodes of that show that are incredibly watchable even in isolation. Also totally agree. Cobra Kai is way better than you expect it to be going into the watch. I agree the kid narrative resonates less for me that the adults, but the character of Hawk is actually one of the better characters in the show in my opinion. They give that guy alot to chew on over the course of the three seasons.
February 22, 2021 9:40 am Well to be fair I have heard criticism of Franklin and Valeria over the years. I hear both sides of the conversation. for my part I believe their is something core about the property. You can change alot about story and it can be meaningful and compelling development for the main character, but I think you want to make sure you understand the impact when you steer too far off that core. What makes a Batman story a Batman story? What makes a Fantastic Four story a Fantastic Four story? What is the central message or central metaphor? I'd argue what makes an FF story isn't hindered by growing the family. At the same time what makes a Batman story can be hindered by Damien depending on how they handle it. What Conor describes is the safer path for these characters to make them evergreen for certain.
February 11, 2021 11:53 am People love lists. I blame David Letterman.
February 8, 2021 12:47 am Man staring at some of those Image #1 covers is like remembering a fever dream you had as a child.
February 8, 2021 12:28 am I loved the segment in defense of the 90s. It's easy to in retrospect just lump the whole decade into the Image revolution and speculation crashing the comic industry. Transmetropolitan, Planetary, The Invisibles, Morrison's Justice League, Marvel Knights in the late 90's were all stuff I loved. In the early 90's I had Sin City, Infinity Gauntlet, X-Men Blue and Gold, X-Tinction Agenda. When you really evaluate it the 90's were actually a pretty exciting time in comics. It only really gets murky in the middle. Even in the middle there were tent poles like Astro City, Hellboy and Preacher. If it wasn't for the toxic speculation the decade would probably be remembered better. I do agree with the guys that Death Of Superman is probably the industry defining book in the 90's in that it set the tone for the sensational way they were going to market to the collector crowd and the speculators. I could also see an argument for X-Men 1 and X-Force setting the tone for the Image revolution. Man the excitement around X-Force 1 at the time was crazy.
February 2, 2021 10:25 am I didn't make it passed the first issue of Shang Chi. There was something about the craft to the storytelling in the art that was losing me. I had trouble following what was going on. You guys say it ended well, which makes me want to struggle through to see how it ends. That's a mountain to climb and if I'm honest with myself I'm probably not gonna climb it. I don't know if others are the same way but I feels like there's alot of pressure on that first issue to sell the book. More so than say a TV show first episode. How many people actually soldier through to the next few issues if they aren't digging the first? I'm willing to bet not many. I'd literally be sailing only on the momentum of Gene Luen Yang's previous achievements.
January 11, 2021 12:28 am The reappearance of Conor the Star Wars fundamentalist. I really enjoy the varied perspectives with regard to that franchise.
