June 15, 2015 12:45 pm Starve was a challenging and innovative book, I was cool you picked it as it was one of those books you wanted to hear what other people thought. That artist Z was pretty damn amazing. The contrast between his gritty, rasputin-like protagonist and the gorgeous daughter was incredible. His story really flowed and I always knew who everyone was and what was going on. But at the end, I was kind of like, omg, am I going to really become invested in a apocalyptic cooking celebrity story?!? I`m definitely going to read issue 2, but likely will switch to trade if I still like things as I think this book eventually look best on my shelf that way. But again, an apocalyptic cooking celebrity story? Maybe he meets the Prince of Tennis...
March 19, 2015 12:53 pm While I agree that the latest Astro City arc was absolutely fantastic and the idea of heroes aging interesting, for me the reason the story worked so well was because it was such an interesting LOVE STORY. I actually got upset when I saw the cover to the current issue...soooo good! What did I feel worse about,, Crackerjack being dead or Quarrel losing the love of her life? Let me nominate this already as cover of the year. I think the Love Story really affected me because it showed so well why these two were right for each other, especially Crackerjack who seems like the last person anyone would ever want to be in a relationship with. The earlier issue where Quarrel dumped good guy MPH seemed terribly authentic to me. So Busiek made me understand why the death of Crackerjack would leave such a gaping hole in Quarrel's life. Bravo. Still absolutely lovin' IFanboy, don't quit you guys! FWIW I nominate Evie (sic) as the permanent 3rd person. The shows always crackled when she guest hosted..
December 17, 2014 6:08 pm Bitch Planet was pretty odd. Written by a dyed-in-the-wool feminist, but totally exploitive!? I should look as good as the "paunchy" Crackerjack. What a lovable dick that guy is! I'm the anti-radpuppy71. I want nothing to do with Valiant and am tired of that sad universe constantly being revived. Sucked up too much money from me back in the Shooter days. Why not create a new universe with new characters. Hell, ask Kurt Busiek to set it up if you have so little creativity.
October 3, 2014 6:35 pm Enjoyed this. I think the Penguin character was great, as are Fish, Maroney, and the other detective. Also I LOVE all the city shots, especially that gorgeous twin towers building. I tried hard to like SHIELD but the bad acting and silly team concept ultimately had me drop it. Gotham is off to a much better start.
September 29, 2014 2:10 pm Man, the show starts and I'm like, "damn, what's that song...!" Nice job guys as always. I've dropped off of Saga, it all just seemed too random. Haven't been getting Sex but you're tempting me to pick up a trade. The Avengers talk reminds me that Conor, you would have enjoyed parts of New Avengers these last few months as Bendis has been having fun slaying universes. The Illuminati killing the Justice League a few weeks ago, and this week opened with them killing Straczynski's Squadron Supreme. The other highlight was a few weeks back, to emphasize that only Namor had the balls to use the super bomb Tony, Hank, and Reed built, Bendis and the artist use a camera worm's eye view straight up the royal groin full page final splash of Namor firing the weapon. Too funny by half!
August 11, 2014 1:43 pm Another comic site for no discernible reason had an article ripping Prince's Batman album...feeling outraged, I had a chance to play the album again and it was so much fun to hear. "Scandalous", "Still I keep Vicki Waiting", "The Arms of Orion", "overcrush"...you could just feel how much fun Prince was having in some little studio. So don't just watch the movie again, listen to the album again too! Thanks for reviewing Lazurus...the timing was perfect, I bought the first TPB over the weekend and was really impressed, especially by Lark's art. Time to get the 2nd trade.
July 14, 2014 6:14 pm After reading exactly what an homage is, I have to say the G0dland book example was perfect, as it really pays tribute and respect to Kirby. Not that Astro City isn't paying tribute and respect, but it's harder to define to exactly what, other than a love for Universe-style superheroics. I like the specificity of the G0dland homage.
June 10, 2014 4:56 pm I disagree pretty strongly. I think this is a very different take on the character. He has never had the smart gadgets the way he does now. While he is more a loner than ever, he is not acting as a mysterious vigilante, but instead seems to work in tandem with the police department. He is driven in a self-driving limo about the town without really hiding his presence. The way he uses his car, his glider, his helicopter, etc, etc, are completely different from anything we've seen in the past (Frenchie adds to growing French unemployment problem). And it appears he scrapped (for the better) what I thought was the ham-handed way that Bendis (who otherwise wrote a great Moon Knight in the recent series) used Cap, Wolverine, and Spidey to showcase his multiple personalities. Overall, I don't think anyone has nearly captured the idea that it is Marc Spector's 'insanity' that is his biggest asset. He seems to have no self-doubt. And I think you have to give the writer credit for some of the art too...I mean, it must be his idea to have MK in a white suit and hoodless mask, and to have variations on the uniform. I've been shocked how this book has jumped to the top of my reading pile. The previous issue where he fought the dead by donning armor for fighting ghosts showed how this character can do things wouldn't feel right with Batman. But, yea, that art IS gorgeous!
