Verily, the cast of Kenneth Branagh's 'Thor' is coming together!

On Nov 20, 2009 4:00 PM

I haven't seen Brian Blessed in anything for a long time, but his Voltan made me a fan for life.  Twenty-five years ago he would have been the PERFECT Volstagg.  Kirby's run on Thor are my favorite Marvel comics of all time, the cast looks terrific (I'd forsake Asgard for Natalie Portman any day of the week) and Branagh's work is almost always inspired.  I'm really looking forwar...

The Best of the Week In... Covers (11/18/09)

On Nov 19, 2009 12:54 PM

@daccampo--At the time, the head-exploding bit was the most horrifying thing I'd ever seen.  Me and my best bud somehow cajoled his mother into taking us to see it after reading about it in FAMOUS MONSTERS and FANGO.  And Michael Ironside is a total badass, sooo good in Scanners and Starship Troopers and, um, Spacehunter Advs in the Forbidden Zone. My pick this week--Supergirl.

Pick of the Week - 11.11.2009 - B.P.R.D. 1947 #5

On Nov 11, 2009 5:06 PM

BPRD was my pick, too, edging ahead of Hellboy and Batman/Doc Savage for the win.  I buy the Hellboy Universe books every time they offer them--singles, trades and Library Editions.  I can't help myself!  In a sea of great comics, I love the Mignolaverse the most.  In a previous Hellboy/BPRD lettercol, if I'm remembering correctly, Editor Scott Allie had said they had&...

11.08.2009 - Episode #209 - Lobo: Highway to Hell #1

On Nov 8, 2009 4:37 PM

I remember watching an ANTHRAX concert video back in the late 80's/early 90's and Scott Ian had a copy of The Killing Joke with him backstage, showing it to the camera and calling it 'the greatest comic ever'.  And Alex Ross painted the cover for their last album.  Ian's never been shy about his love for comics.

The Best of the Week in... Covers (07/29/09)

No love for this weeks Superman cover?  It's a composition we've seen before, but I don't think I've ever seen it pulled off quite as well.

07.08.2009 - Wednesday Comics #1

On Jul 9, 2009 2:01 AM

Great pick,  Ron.  It was mine, too, with GL coming in a close second.  I am a story guy--I can't remember the last time I bought a book solely for the art (ok, I do--Absolute Hush).  And I thought the stories all worked remarkably well (with the exception of Wonder Woman and Titans)--Azzarello (who I've never been a fan of) and Risso's Batman was a masterpiece.  @Won...

06.24.2009 - Detective Comics #854

The art in this book is simply stunning.  I am so loving the bat-universe right now.    And next week, more Bat-goodness with Batman and Robin #2.  What a streak for the POW, if only Ron had bought Streets of Gotham . . . !

Dark Horse: My Favorite Publisher of 2008

On Jan 6, 2009 10:15 AM

Completely agree.  While my heart belongs to the DCU, I feel that DH is the better company, not only for the original books that they publish--HELLBOY/BPRD, THE HOWARD BOOKS, GOON, FEAR AGENT, AND USAGI--but also for their wonderful reprint projects.  The CREEPY/EERIE and BORIS KARLOFF books seem like they were made just for me. I've been buying DH books since CONCRETE #1; they've a...

Sure, I'll Sell Your Comics For You!

On Dec 8, 2008 11:30 AM

Glad to hear of the love for COMIC RELIEF--my buddy owns the chain and works very hard at it.  As far as I know, its still the only shop in the St. Louis area to offer discounts to its pull and hold customers.  Jim, any chance of giving us the initials of the shop you referred to in the article?  I used to to know every shop in the area, but my wanderlust has cooled somewhat the...
