Captain Marvel v3 #11 by Peter David and Jim Starlin
Genis meets the Mar-Vell from a parallel universe after exploring a spacial rift. After a short time of bonding, and even after Mar-Vell tells his "son" how proud of him he is, they both realize that they have to shut down the rift by focusing their photonic energy from both sides of it... meaning they'll never see each other again.
After a sad, heartfelt goodbye, we learn that Mar-Vell is the sole survivor of the Milky Way galaxy in his universe... and he dies of cancer, all alone. The only thing that comforts him is knowing that somewhere, a part of him still lives on.

You think the only good comics talent to come out of C-town is Bendis and Vaughan? Derf blows them both away!!
Nice article, Ron.
I was around 12 years old around the time Liefeld was drawing New Mutants, and it's that title (and Liefeld) that got me into comics. As a 14 year old kid, Liefeld's over-the-top, highly kinetic artwork totally got me off. I mean, how could it not at 14? Big guns, girls with big boobs, and tons of glowing eyes and shit. As soon as one of my friends showed me an issue of NM, I was immediately hooked on comics.
I'll totally agree that Liefeld's stuff isn't as "good" as it used to be. Just looking at those pages that you posted show the amount of energy Liefeld injected into his comics. Sadly, he just doesn't inject that same energy into his pages as he used to.
But again, nice article. You've definitely put me in a mood of reminiscence, almost longing for those magical days of the 90's... the formation of Image, the "grim n' gritty" scene, and gimmick covers abound.
I agree with Edward. I can't remember the last time I've picked up a Vertigo book that was THIS bad... the dialogue is laughable ("He's been shot!" exclaims the rather portly Indian lady when Fletch is in fact shot...), the art is HORRIBLE. Horrible. The whole package is just an amateurish mess, and I give the series 16 issues at best before it's axed (which is a conservative number, this is Vertigo, and they tend to let their books find their audience before doing anything drastic).
The first issue was bad. This one's worse.
Great pick Josh. Mine too. Loved it when Oliver just kind of shrugged off the fact that he killed them by saying "I didn't mean to, it was an accident"...
...also loved the scene where Cecil approaches Oli, much to Invincibles dismay.
