August 27, 2011 10:17 am Two recent articles I came across seem pertinent:
1. "Apple Fanboyism (sic) Is A Religion: Neuroscientists Find Both Trigger Same Reaction In Brain" (http://www.businessinsider.com/apple-is-a-religion-neuroscientists-find-it-triggers-the-same-reaction-in-your-brain-2011-5)
2. "Fanbois(sic) treat criticism of favorite (sic) brands as threat to self-image" (http://arstechnica.com/science/news/2011/08/users-treat-criticism-of-favorite-brands-as-threat-to-self-image.ars?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+arstechnica%2Findex+%28Ars+Technica+-+Featured+Content%29)
I always found the referencing of comic greats in Astro City to be highly evocative and effective. Its an all encompassing world, built on the foundations left by the comic greats. The naming conventions tell me as much about the world as the character archetypes..
March 9, 2011 12:30 pm I was almost exclusively reading Vertigo around the time Starman started.
I made a sort of deal with myself - that I will only read comics that are unique (at the time) to the medium. As in, these sotries could not be a book, or a film, or theatre etc.
The first issue I picked up was issue 27 (the one with Santa) which got me curious. I found issue 29 (designed to be new reader friendly) at a news agents, and was hooked.
Very much enjoyed the episode. I remember getting into Stormwatch and Wildcats v3.0 all those years ago - principal reason being that neither DC nor Marvel was giving me mature (not porn) superhero fix.
Wildcats 3.0 is particular was really something new... a corporation that was genuinely trying to do good things for the people...

Starman fit my mantra perfectly.
