November 14, 2011 10:28 pm @Connor and for the record Jim's previous article you cited was about the health of the industry versus what people say is going on. It was not a rejection of the idea that sales matter at all.
November 14, 2011 10:14 pm @Connor, reading what I wrote is hard, but not that hard. Again, I don't think the claim was leveled literally, and you can't see past that to even discuss the larger point in the reply to the reply. Niiiiiiice.
November 14, 2011 10:00 pm I think dharmabum makes a larger point that the two are related, not calling out Jimski in particular. To simply dismiss the cost argument by essentially saying "well, that's what it costs to play the game" is ridiculous. The problem is that to those of us not steeped in the game, we'd play more if it cost less. I have gone in and out of comics largely based on price. I have said it numerous times, and I love the reviews and pull list feature on the site, but when it comes to digital comics and pricing this site is so out of touch with reality it makes me think there's a couple future Republican front runners for President here. The defensiveness against this statement really illustrates that.
November 7, 2011 10:40 pm The key to all this is that this piracy is much like the music piracy of old. These comics come out within hours of comic shops opening on Wednesday. This is something the comics industry has got to cope and compete with, and just like other print media and the music industry it is handling it poorly.
November 7, 2011 1:15 pm I think the big untalked about story here is the proliferation of free scanned comics. All the people that say comics are not going digital are the same ones who didn't think Mp3's would take over because of their lessened sound quality or newspapers because you can't take a laptop into the bathroom and throw it away when you're done. Comics are going to be the records of the print world. My tablet and the pirating of comics now is just like my Rio and the pirating of music in 2000. What can I say? I see the way the wind is blowing a lot faster than my peers. I hate guided viewing. The best thing digital comics could do is go basic. Facebook beat Myspace because the system is so basic it paired back what was going on to what everyone really cares about. Just going over the numbers in my head (and seeing what other publications have done in similar formats, my wife has a digital subscription to US Magazine among others) using digital format is much cheaper, the delivery system almost negates the entire cost of mass production, and increased sales lead to increased revenue on an unprecedented level when compared to the cost of producing a new comic for a second run, shipping it, and then paying a vendor to sell it. I've been trying to get the iFanbase to consider the issues surrounding this, most specifically Ron, Josh, and Connor to start lobbying for a more workable system than what already exists. I'd suggest something modeled on a hybrid of iTunes and the current subscription model. The key is to keep costs low by going for a more stripped down experience.
October 30, 2011 3:50 pm This comic was more unnecessary than my vestigial tail.
October 28, 2011 8:06 pm It is a really great show. I think with the move to digital only sales (because it cuts out the middle man, and people seem to prefer it) the "DVD Extras" are going to be a thing of the past. I heard a movie critic talk about how digital delivery is ruining movies because they shoot them so you can watch on your phone. Pretty soon you're going to be doing "iTunes reviews" for how well it looks on your phone or tablet. I'm sure there will always be a place for disc based sales, but just as phones have wiped out the portable gaming industry, even though their games are much simpler, iHomes are making disc based entertainment irrelevant.
October 28, 2011 9:31 am This is the first legion comic I even remotely understood.
October 23, 2011 4:55 pm Best line "Is it true that Kung Fu related deaths are already up 200% over the last year?" Only in the Marvel U would the press keep track of these things.
October 9, 2011 6:21 pm I don't really know what to think about this book anymore. The writing is stilted and the characters all look like Weapon X from Liefeld's time on X-Force. Not a horrible comic, but one whose concept is not matching the product.
