June 3, 2017 3:23 pm Slow down? Why? For stupid people? Listening to people talk slowly is like nails on a chalkboard to me.
April 9, 2017 10:45 pm I agree 100% that what is wrong with Marvel is Alonzo, and that is shocking to me. When he was coming up, he was the cool maverick editor at Marvel. Once he became EIC, though, he basically seems to make poor decision after poor decision. I think he thinks that he is taking comics back to their subversive roots, but NOTHING they are doing is working for me.
February 13, 2017 6:16 am I find your comment to be so interesting because of where you think the influences for the show come from. I would agree with your argument that elements of the show are derivative of other things, but I would come up with a COMPLETELY different list of where the things come from. The narration, I think, is pulled from American Beauty. At one point Jughead even uses the line "look closer", which was a tagline for that film. The entire film of American Beauty is told in that dramatic narration of past events that always manages to foreshadow that something worse is right around the corner and that the events don't end well. (This game narration style was used in Tom King's "The Vision") As for the other plot elements, the overall tone of the film and the murder seems to be ripped directly from Twin Peaks, which is not a bad thing. I grew up in the late 80s and 90s so most of my childhood was spent watching shows that were derivative of Twin Peaks. Riverdale feels like a warm old blanket, in that regard. Most of the character backstories seem to be taken right from Dawson's Creek, the premier WB/CW teen drama. Veronica is a party girl from the big city who is slumming it with locals ala Jen from Dawson's Creek. The "Betty is in love with Archie but he has eyes for Veronica" is akin to the Joey, Dawson, Jenn love triangle of that shows first season. The teenager in a relationship with a teacher plot is straight out of Season 1 of Dawson's creek, except that storyline was reserved for a secondary character. As for the football player being secretly gay... that's a well worn plot line from many, many dramas. Dawson's Creek being one.
December 27, 2016 7:14 pm There are absolutely a lot of idiots who say that The Force Awakens is full of plot holes. But there are also a lot of idiots who don't know what plot holes are. The internet at large thinks a plot hole is when the characters in a film do something stupid or something they don't like. That's not a plot hole.
November 29, 2016 6:46 pm My big fear for the Han Solo film is that they will try to make him into a great pilot. Part of the core of Han's character is that you don't really know if he actually IS or IS NOT a great pilot. HE says he is. But he's full of ego and bravado. He's rarely right about things, so I feel like fans have done a disservice to the story by taking him at his word that the Millenium Falcon really IS a great ship and he really IS a great pilot. I think it's much more interesting if they both fail and succeed in equal measure.
November 13, 2016 3:17 pm I've been trying to follow along with the Inhumans, to some extent, but the thing that I find missing is a sense of purpose. While the X-men RARELY did anything related to their purpose, you could still explain what their overall mission was in one quick sentence. And when the train went off the rails, they could always start a new series and re-state their mission statement (As they did with Whedon's Astonishing X-Men Number 1, for instance.) The modern Inhumans seem like they are just a bunch of random people who live together. It's season 1 of The Real World.
November 13, 2016 2:30 pm I totally agree about Alex Wilder's villain change being dumb. As great as that series was, it just felt tremendously unearned. SO every time he shows up afterwards, there is an assumption that somehow he's going to say he was really good all along.
