June 1, 2012 4:53 pm Understanding what Josh wrote in this very fine article, and that DC has a very difficult position with respect to the three points he makes, I think DC is being a bit disingenuous. Of course I’m not enraged that it’s Alan Scott, or infuriated that it’s a member of the Green Lantern family. What angers me is that not only does Earth 2 #2 have Alan Scott literally flaming on the cover, but DC chickened out and chose the brand name (Green Lantern) for the public recognition (what there is of it). Then the details are that it’s the alternate universe version and a completely different guy than what you see every week on the Cartoon Network show, essentially shoving him into a parallel dimension closet. Good work, DC. Good work. If they had the guts and wanted it to be a Green Lantern, and a human one, then there’s Kyle Rayner, who more suits the description for when DC said it was going to be a major character that everyone knows. Or even better, maybe Billy Batson if they didn’t want to go with a Green Lantern. Marvel outclassed DC on this by a factor of 100 with the Northstar wedding. My opinion, I respect yours, please respect mine. That was a very fine article, Josh, and since it IS James Robinson, I'll certainly be reading and know it'll be good. I just wish it was something in the main DCU, that's all.
May 8, 2012 1:33 pm A sequel? Yes, please! I suspect the long-term plan is something to do with the Infinity Gauntlet. They already showed a prop of the Gauntlet a couple years ago at SDCC, and the staff that Loki was given in the film clearly seems to have a soul gem. Why not do a sequel where there is another gem involved and get in a little Ultron action while you're at it? Double your action, double your fun. :)
May 2, 2012 2:24 pm Conor, if you ever get a chance, try to track down the JSA stories in Adventure Comics from the 1970s with the death of the Earth-2 Batman and if I remember right, the introduction of the Huntress. Those were pretty good too and was the beginning of my appreciation of the JSA.
April 10, 2012 1:57 pm I think DC may not be as flexible as they want people to believe when it comes to Superman. Like I was thinking after listening to the podcast on Sunday evening, we got one hell of a bait and switch when it came to Action Comics. I, like Mike, was hoping for a good solid run of t-shirt, jeans and Doc Marten's Superman as he grows into the role and gains the trust of the police department and citizens of Metropolis - de-powered and fighting for the downtrodden. Instead we get the tail end of it and a tease of what it COULD have been like.
March 2, 2012 3:13 pm Since it's unlikely we'd get the Robert Kirkman show weekly, how about use the video show for specials like convention reports and full length interviews?
February 28, 2012 1:35 pm I kept going with Superman and I think after this first story arc I'm finished. Confusing, yes? Not as fun as Action? Certainly. But what gets me is that this first six issues of Superman seem to be a retread of the Sand Superman story from the 1970s. Or at least a variation of it. Meh... I agree with you, Mike, that Justice League went off the rails and the last issue was just perplexing with how Batman revealed his identity to Green Lantern. Whaaaa? We'll know if DC is truly serious about the reboot and making it permanent and not some stealth "event" when we start seeing the new character designs and costumes showing up on store shelves at Target, WalMart, etc. in the form of action figures, t-shirts, etc. Right now I bet DC is in wait and see mode for reaction and to decide if they try to revert back.
November 8, 2011 12:32 pm Superman in Action > Superman in Superman. For the first time in YEARS I'm getting the two Superman titles and I think with the way it's trending I'll drop Superman after the first arc and keep Action as long as Grant Morrison's vision remains intact. With the new 52 I lost some titles, but I'm trying some new ones. Many of them didn't stick, but if they stick for others, that's fantastic of course, and enjoy your comics. As I start my slow conversion to digital, I'm putting my toe in the water with Animal Man and loving it. But I have to stick with printed for my Green Lantern titles. Can't take those away from me! :) At our local comic shop they're seeing lots of new business with the new 52, which is good, because 1) It's great for business, especially around the holidays 2) This could have gone in a different direction since this new era is also a great jumping off point for readers who are tired and will take their closure and be done with it. I've been mulling looking over my pull list at the shop and dropping some things. Mostly stuff I buy out of habit. Time to focus on what I really enjoy and not what I feel obligated to buy.
November 1, 2011 12:32 pm A double-dip so soon after release of the 2nd Parker book is a bit disappointing, but if the extras are as awesome as you describe, I may have to take the plunge and get in the pre-order. When you finish up the Rocketeer, if you get a chance, check out the Artist's Edition. Simply. Amazing. It's all outstanding work.
June 15, 2011 3:47 pm Awesome article, Mike! This lifelong Hal Jordan fan can't wait for the midnight show! I still can't believe it's really happening. Now I know what the Iron Man, Thor, Superman, etc fans were going thru before those movies were released. :)
