January 14, 2011 4:30 am I loved the first 12 issues of Planetary.  I think they're about as perfect as comics can get.

Unfortunately, when Ellis started phoning it in the writing went downhill fast.  I got a real air of resentment from him in the last few issues as he sped through plot points with none of the interesting pacing and examination of the first run in an effort to get the monkey off his back.

Mind you, I was there from the beginning and had a healthy dose of resentment built in for the disrespect shown to the readers as we waited to see what happened and had promises continually broken.

I'd still recommend it to readers, though.  The standalone stories are wonderful, beautiful things even if I feel the arc falls kind of flat.

Looks like fun.  My only quibbles are Blake Lively's delivery on that piece of exposition was extraordinarily wooden.  I've not seen her in anything else, but I've never heard anything bad about her acting skills.  Surely there was another take?  And they seem to be following the Transformers movies by overly complicating CG effects while quick cutting around them.  Which makes it difficult (for me at least) to get a read on what I'm supposed to have just seen.   It's a trailer though, and I'm not going to take that as a guide for the look/pace of the film. 

The space/alien stuff looked very nice.  And while Reynolds isn't going to win any awards, I find him really enjoyable in everything he's in.  He must be holding a record for the number of comic characters played now, surely?

Another point to make is that Dan Didio's Sunday afternoon panels always mention how much he enjoys/enjoyed Marvel Comics and have Marvel creators on them to talk about how they all love comics and their stories about growing up with them.

I find them pretty heartwarming I have to say.

Why not just put a flash on the title saying "The start of a brand new exciting story!"  Or give them a banner, since Marvel seems to like banners.  Or even a specific logo/title branding.

I just don't see the benefit to this system.  Why hide away the fact that it's a jumping on point in the numbering box?  Which is generally so small as to be unreadable.  Are new readers going to scan shelves to see ".1" after a number on a cover, provided they enter a store that shelves their comics in such a way as you can see the numbering?  After the proprietor has identified them as a new reader (by some form of telepathy or by knowing all of his customers by sight) and then explained to them that ".1" after a comic means that they should read that comic so they won't get scared away by ongoing stories.

Marketing-wise it's a mess.  As a campaign it doesn't know what it's audience is, doesn't convey a clear message and it hides it's own identity.

The only thing this reminds me of is the bizarre 0.5 issue craze of the mid-90s, which goes along with the revival of everything else from that decade.

 As I recall, there was a story going around a few years ago that Marvel promoted and released their half of the Amalgam trades (each company published half and split the profits) while in bankruptcy and when the time came to pay, DC Quesada and Jemas turned around and said that DC weren't getting a cent.  Which DC took, I think rightly, as a dick move and put into place a policy of not working with Marvel while either Jemas or Quesada were in charge.  Why get burned twice?

I don't know if it's true, and can't remember where I even heard it now.  Has anyone else heard this?

I find the snarking horrible to listen to, personally.  And the fact that 90% of it I hear is from Quesada against DC has driven me away from enjoying Marvel comics.  At least Stan had a sense of grace and playfulness.

Isis in myth was the Sister and wife of Osiris.  Just so you know that their relationship was always creepy.  :)

 Good episode with a few clunky moments.  Thank god they fired the trigger at the end.  I wasn't looking forward to more mooning around, and it being the last series I want to see some of the dynamic where they both know.

 Great review.  I'm really enjoying this series, too.  I really hope Jaime gets a few more moments to shine so people will go back and read his book.  So much hate seems to have come from people because he's not Ted despite the fact he's a great character and his series was one of the most fun things put out in the past few years.
