From the “opening credits sequence” (totally set to “Be My Baby” )to a genuine “what the f?” cliffhanger, Young Avengers #1 was exactly what I wanted. Which is pretty damn impressive considering that I haven’t read anything Avengers since Ellis’ guest turn on Secret Avengers. Then again, impressive is what the Gillen/McKelvie team has always been for me. Kieron Gillen writes teens and early 20s like I remember being in my teens and early 20s, not with some nostalgic haze, but with the messy, sloppy mess that age truly is. McKelvie’s art is magnificent as always. Cartooned without being cartoony and the panel layouts are a kinetc dream.

I don’t write many reviews and never for books that are gonna be reviewed on the podcast. But this book? Wow. There was no way I wasn’t going to praise it to the heavens.
