As we all know, the first issue of this run on Xombi was a little…..how should I put this?….Oh yes, weird as hell. I was definitely all for it, weird things make me notice stuff more. So I quickly got this in my pull bin after the first issue and I was ready for the strangest to continue. Although I am a bit disappointed because, if I’m honest, this was a rather normal issue.

Well by ‘normal’ I mean we have nuns with guns, killer ghost children, and the wrath of God to now worry about. So in that regard this is still a crazy comic. I like it how John Rozum is not phased at all when he put this script into a final draft. It’s all sane to him and that’s why it works so well. He isn’t trying hard unlike other writers. Anyways this was a strong issue even though it wasn’t as strange as before. It’s an action packed book filled with a lot of gunplay and wasp-thingys using ray guns. Rozum is able to balance it all very well though and not make you scratch your head. Yes I have no idea who this Marantha is but he is able to give in enough clues not to make you feel like you lost a page or two.

Then you have the original reason why I picked this series up: Frazer Irving. It really feels like Irving is giving 110% into this comic and embracing the weird. Again he’s one of the few artists I can stand that goes full digital into his entire work. Sometimes though, in this book, it doesn’t feel like it’s all computer generated and it looks like actual pencils on paper. But it doesn’t matter what it is, all I know is that it is insanely gorgeous. What definitely helps is his weird color schemes. Bright blues, dark purples, offensive pinks, and dark oranges really sell this book to me. That and he can make a nun shooting a gun look badass.

So while this issue isn’t strange per say, it has more then enough originality and creativity to keep it just as interesting as the first issue. The characters are bizarre, but badass. The art may not suit everybody, but it definitely works for me. Finally, it just has some of the best ideas I’ve seen in a comic in a long time. If you haven’t picked this series up yet I urge everyone to do so. Trust me, it’s something you aren’t going to forget.

Story: 4 - Very Good
Art: 5 - Excellent

  1. Xombi # 1 was the best comic I read in the month of March. I just hope this comic gets enough support and sticks around, for a very long time.

  2. I agree with you. Great art, great story. A little less “punchy” lines than the first one, but still quite good! Maranatha looks kinda sick hehe, eager to see the upcoming battle!
