I realize I'm a week late with this but I have an excuse: I didn't know Adam Warren had anything to do with it so, like just about everyone else, I completely ignored this last week. See, his name isn't on the cover or solicitations or, well, anywhere. Sure, Claremont's imprimatur is emblazoned on the cover but not one mention of one of comics' better unsung writers. And that's a damn shame.
I can't tell you much about the main story because I forgot it about 2 minutes after I read it. Now, add in the fact that my sole knowledge of Betsy Braddock - aka Psylocke - is that about 20 years ago Jim Lee drew a chessecake-y shot of her that raised some eyebrows. What you get is a big old pile of I-don't-give-a-shit/why-the-fuck-did-Marvel-publish-this?
Then comes the backup story. And now I know why.
Adam Warren writes, Rick Mays draws. I wish this team was permanent on something because nobody other than Warren himself can put pictures to his words like Mr. Mays can. Seriously, check out the Livewires trade, or those Gen13 issues they worked on together. Great stuff. And this story maintains the tradition. It's a simple one: Logan telling the reader of how he and Betsy used to drink together. They'd swap war stories, she'd make fun of him "drinking beer with a moose on it" and he'd give her crap about how her new, smokin' hot ninjette body couldn't hold it's liquor like her original, Caucasian one could. It's an old warrior reminiscing about a lost friend, intercut with scenes from one of those old war stories. Once Logan had finished, I felt his loss. And prior to this book, I didn't know a thing about her.
This is just good comics.
