While I still have yet to get the rest of my stack, I made a point of picking this up as it's not on my regular list. I was a Marvel Zombie back in the day, and I keep trying to get back into the Marvel U. The problem is, I just can't seem to. And this book didn't help. I was already critical of the last issue when the "Hellfire Kids" handed several seasoned X-Men and the Master of Magnetism their heads. (Maybe we need to bring in the X-Babies?) And while this issue had some good things, it had a lot of "what the?" moments too. As others have pointed out, there are some inconsistencies within this book. Wolverine suddenly not wanting to fight with kids? Kitty was a kid and the New Mutants were all pretty young too. And isn't X-23 young? (I admit I don't know tons about the character.) And how old is Quire whom Wolvie presumably slashed off panel? Then there's the Wolvie/Cyclops fight. Sitting on top of a stack of explosives with a giant Sentinel bearing down on you strikes me as perhaps not being the best place for a macho scrap. (And that's what it came down to really, isn't it? The Jean comments that put them both over the top?) If I were those X-Kids, I'd be inclined to think "they're both idiots" and get gone. The thing of it is, the argument itself is a good one. Wolvie and Cyke make valid points. The voices are handled well in that they sound like the characters should. It's just the way this is all being done - and particularly the fact that it's all part of the "Hellfire Kids" master plan just makes it feel overly done. It's not that these aren't the X-Men. It's just the X-Men should be better than this at this point in their lives. Also good: Alan Davis. Has he ever done a bad page? Not in my opinion. And he delivers the goods here too. Dynamic action, great expressions, cool angles... fantastic work as per usual. Maybe I've just been away from the X-Men too long. I thought this might be a good jumping back on point. But I just find too much too odd with things. If this is the event that splits the team up, it all feels way too easy.
