Magneto is one of the most interesting Villains in comics. Like most Marvel Villains, there's a lot of gray (be it dark gray) area with him. It mainly has to do with his past. This series takes place when his Mutant Powers first manifested themselves.
This first issue has less to do with his powers (which we see briefly) and more about the holocaust, and what it was like to be Jewish in Nazi Germany. He and his family are outcasts because of their ethnicity.
One thing that struck me, was a line in the book where Magneto's father mentions the richness in German history. He hints how it is being replaced by Nazi propaganda. My grandparents are from Germany, and I was lucky enough to go on a family trip with them touring "The Fatherland." My late Grandfather said something similiar to me which was, "look at all this rich history, and it's been erased by the Nazis."
The story is really good, and I'm intrigued to see the tragedy that will unfold. Greg Pak has a note in the back page, where he talks about the research that went into this book. This seems to be a passion projetct for him, and you can definitely tell.
I loved Carmine Di Giandomenico's art in Daredevil: Battlin' Jack Murdock, and I was excited to see him working on this series. Unfortunately, the art doesn't seem as good as his previous mini series, so I was a little disappointed. It still is good, and I loved the scene where young Magneto is engulfed by a Nazi demonstration, where they are beating his older brother.
I strongly recommend picking up this prestige series. I've enjoyed what Marvel Knights has morphed into and I'm in for Magneto Testament.
