Reading “Second Coming” has been one of the most visceral comic experiences I have had in a very long time.  There is a lot of writing talent on the “X” books right now, and they seem to have collaborated beautifully on this story.  I hope they can keep the excitement coming.  Lots of fans said the first few installments were a lot like “Cable.”  I’m not sure, since I haven’t been reading that title, but in this story, the chase scenes have been executed in an exciting, cinematic fashion.  Who wouldn’t want to see that kind of a chase scene in an “X-Men” film?  Each chapter has added some interesting twists to the story.  The “X-Man” who dies in this story is not killed gratuitously, but for a dramatic reason.  The death helps to illustrate how desperate the X-Men are, and how bad ass Bastian is as a villain.  As the gazillionth iteration of the Sentinels, Bastian appears to be a worthy adversary for the X-Men — the kind of villain the team does not encounter very often.  Being made of metal though, I wonder how he will stand up to Magneto.

The art in this comic is great, with Choi doing his usual sexy and detailed work.  Adi Granov contributes a powerful cover with the White Queen embracing Hope (Although neither looks very hopeful.) and both of them smeared with blood.

  1. Bastion is sentinel based, so sadly he will probably hold up to Magneto well.
