This is another great issue of “X-Factor” from Peter David. Shatterstar is being developed into the comic industry’s first sexy, badass gay (or perhaps bisexual) character. The last time I read anything about Shatterstar was in the early issues of Volume I of “X-Force” where Liefeld was writing him, in terms of personality, as something of a cipher with swords. David is writing Shatterstar as a cross between Wolverine and Gambit, which makes sense given Shatterstar’s origin in the Mojo universe. Shatterstar’s ability to teleport appears to be David’s idea, and I think it’s cool that he creates a giant “X” as the portal. David is doing a good job with characterization in general in this title. Ruby is an intriguing character who seems to take pleasure in teasing and irritating the other X-Men. So far, Ruby seems only to have the same powers as her father, but I’m interested to see what David will do with her in the future. Doctor Doom has not been written this well in a very long time. I had been thinking that Doom was overused and that Marvel’s writers should give him a break, but David shows us a new, more philosophical side of a Doom who is sliding into dementia. Doom taking a stronger hand in the plot development is an interesting twist.
For the most part, I have been enjoying the art on this series. I guess DeLandro gets credit for the updating of Shatterstar’s costume, which is welcome. The only problem with this issue is that the faces (Layla’s for instance) are a little inconsistent.
Art: 4 - Very Good
