X-Factor has pretty much cemented itself as the most consistent X-book on the market ever since the Secret Invasion tie-in debacle. It's always been good and will probably stay good until it is cancelled or ended.
This issue is the perfect example of consistency because it is a character-driven filler issue that seems to be linking story arcs together. Most writers cannot handle this type of issue but savvy veteran Peter David can, and he shows it here. As always there are the smile-inducing one-liners and visuals, but there are two stories here: the Darwin and Rictor/Rahne
I always thought more could be done with Darwin ( as evidenced by his inclusion in the new X-men movie reboot) ever since he was created by Brubaker, but Bru never got me interested in the character. He never really took off with the X-men and hasn't had his centric issues in X-Factor. That changed here. I am genuinely interested in what he will do in issues to come, something I never thought could happen to me regarding Darwin. Before he joined X-Factor, I always thought he would be seen in the background of some issue of X-men Legacy with me going " Hey, there's Darwin. He had so much potential." This leaves him with potential. It just depends whether PAD can execute it later on.
The Rictor and Wolfsbane story wraps up nicely. David did a good job of showing the emotions Rictor wanted to be a father and also did not. It's a very real thing that you do not get in many superhero comics.
De Landro's art was the norm. He's good for these in between issues that do not have much action. Looks like this is coming out twice this month with a "True Grit" Darwin on the next cover. I liked that movie and I'm sure I will like the next issue of X-Factor.
Story: 4 - Very Good
Art: 3 - Good
Art: 3 - Good
Thought it was masterful how David could portray what was such a simple, mundane explanation for why Rahne came back to Rictor as the cause of such great consternation, so common in everyone’s daily life.
Yeah, I also loved her reference back to the first issue of the series. Great stuff
