There will come a day when walking down the street with a Wonder Woman comic tucked under your arm doesn’t led itself to embarrassment and ridicule. When you don’t have to make sure that the WONDER WOMAN cover is hidden beneath something cooler like an X-Men or Batman comic. That day will come. Soon. Maybe even today.

And we have Brian Azzarello and Co. to thank for that day.

I’m about to speak some truth to you. Can you handle the truth? Comic Books are mostly read by dudes. Yes, I know it’s hard to believe but this medium is catered towards mammals with the Y chromosome. Men. Boys. Dudes. We outnumber our female fanboys 5 to 1. Perhaps that fraction has changed a little over the years and there are more female readers now then ever before, but the sad fact remains we men are still the majority.

This fact in mind, comic book companies with their desire to make money deliver month after month books intended to “titillate” the male readers – goad us into buying their product. The average 14 year old boy is more apt to spend his 2.99 on Savage Wolverine then Wonder Woman. It’s just the plain truth.

Now then, the average 41 year male comic book reader who doesn’t give a fuck about Savage Wolverine and Shanna the She-Devils boobies and much rather read a comic book with a fantastic story that is thoughtful and engaging and well worth his money is gonna go home with Wonder Woman tucked under his arm – not caring that anyone sees that “Logo” – yet.

Reading Wonder Woman these last 19 months has been great. The story taking place here feels so much removed from the oppressive and tedious ones playing right now in DC’s New 52 Universe it amazes me that Azzarello has been able to keep the barbarians at the gate from crashing in for so long.

Diana’s characterization is LIGHTYEARS away then that of her Justice League doppelganger – where-in Wonder Woman is being played out for those 14 year old Fanboys attention spans. Not here in her own title though, here the Amazon is portrayed in such a strong willed and caring and empowering manner that I feel this should be mandatory reading for all new coming comic readers, both male and female. This comic shows us that tits and ass does not a female super-hero make.

There is a scene here in Wonder Woman #19 that brings everything I’m talking about home – Orion, being new to the scene, sees Diana / Wonder Woman as an object of desire and starts to “spit some game” so to speak. And like any D-Bag we’ve seen at the clubs, or bars, he treats the girl with disrespect. Wonder Woman aint having any of that, in the one of the best pages I’ve read all year grabs the motherfucker by the balls and says, “I can live without your disrespect. Can you live without THESE?” Orion answers (in a higher pitched voice no doubt), “I dont’ want to….” Wonder Woman finishes up, “Then respect me, or I’ll rip them off. We clear?”

This is what I want from a Wonder Woman comic. This is worth my money and time. This is one of the best comics being published right now. This is cool.

Story: 5 - Excellent

  1. I’m not usually one to demand things around here (or in general), but if the exchange with Orion isn’t in the Panels of the Week, someone’s gonna hear about it!

  2. Amen! I laughed out loud at that panel. It was such a great way to show that Diana knows ALL the power she wields, and isn’t afraid to remind others when provoked.

  3. Love this review, even if I haven’t read the comic yet. This and Nightwing were my only DC picks this week. Great to know DC still has some good stuff coming out.

    • Thanks sensei (feel like I should bow when I say that). You should pick up the first trade of this series (not sure if the 2nd one is out yet) – this story lends itself to reading it in one sitting – written for trade, as they say.

Yep there are still good comics coming out from DC these days – you just gotta know where to look.

    • Oops sorry, you have read this series just not issue 19 yet. =)

But hey you should still grab those trades anyway and read this awesome story again!
