This is a smart comic. Thank god for Brian Azzarello and Cliff Chiang, they made Wonder Woman a must read. This third week of DC number 1’s saw a lot of sex and tits and ass and shitty writing, Wonder Woman #1 stays well clear of all that mess and delivers a excellent comic book, and like I said before, it’s smart as hell.

There is a lot to love about this book. Chiang’s art work could carry this book on it’s awesomeness alone, but paired with Azzarello’s script something magical takes place – they become inseparable. The art and writing co-exist on a level that most of the time is achived only by Writer/Artist creators such as Frank Miller, Darwn Cooke or Howard Chaykin. This symbiotic relationship of story and art is also on high display in a comic like Preacher. I cannot imagine Preacher drawn by anyone other then Steve Dillion – it is as much HIS book as Garth Ennis’ baby. Those two guys were in the “zone” so to speak.

Funny I should bring Preacher up in this Wonder Women review, because in a way this first issue as the makings of an epic battle between GOD’s, much like Preacher did. There may not be any chicken-fucking or dick-shooting-off’ing in Wonder Woman, but the violence that is shown in issue 1 is there for a reason (just like when T.C fucked that chicken in Preacher, it was there for a reason, to move the story to a point where the shit hit the fan).

Azzarello is giving us a battle that can only be fought by Diana. This is a smart move. Make Wonder Woman’s struggles play out on the fringes of the DCU. Let Superman and Captain Atom handle volcanos erupting in Manhattan and giant robots get smashed by Supergirl – Wonder Woman has got Hades and Zeus’s scored wife to deal with.
