Take a deep breath and relax. Take a deep breath and relax. Do some calm meditations and go out and read the final issue of Old Man Logan. Don't get upset, relax and enjoy yourself.
I freak out a lot, I know. I like to think I'm passionate but obviously I get a bit overboard with my feelings. For the past several months and only three issues I believe; Old Man Logan has raised by blood pressure like no other comic. Now obviously from the beginning of this story, there wasn't going to be a deep story here. It was going to be an action packed tale that takes place in a very bleak future for the Marvel Universe. For a while I was enjoying this and the words, as Mark Millar also advertised it, 'Best Wolverine Story Ever' was crossing my mind. But then something weird happened; I wasn't enjoying this for what it was! The idea of 'holy shit' moments and 'blood and guts' weren't appealing to me anymore. If people still enjoyed it then that's okay, but for some reason I wasn't enjoying it anymore. The premise wore off pretty quickly and obvious patterns were starting to show. I'm addressing this now because this is how I feel about this series as a whole; especially with this final issue.
Logan going after the Hulk family just bored me. Sure the ways he was killing them were somewhat cool, but to suddenly make this a Logan/Banner fight just bothered me. His family was slaughtered and even by the end of the issue I don't think Millar addressed it well at all. There's no emotion in this when I read it, it all feels static and forced. Logan slaughtering the Hulks got old and the fight with Banner made no sense. How did regular Bruce Banner get that strength and how could Wolverine survive getting chewed to peices? If it was one bite then I can make sense of it; but he probably got cut to several peices and simmered in acid. You can't survive that even if you have a healing factor. Speaking of healing factors; why the hell are the Hulks going down this easy? If Banner has a healing factor then so do his family, if they are really blood related then this shouldn't have been a slaughter. Then you get to the ending and I just dont care. We only see the townspeople once before, so there's no emotional attachment to them. Logan, as mentioned earlier, mourning his family seems forced. Plus the idea of fighting the bad guys from here on out doesnt make much sense. He finished his vendetta and actually killed Red Skull! Why does he need to continue this plight? By the time we got to the final page I was left with more questions then answers.
I went a bit overboard with McNiven last issue. Yes it's seriously frustrating that he took this long; and yes I still stand by my problems with this series. But I can't give this a one or a two because it is amazing to look at. The detail is astounding and when we get to the 'holy shit' moments he does deliever. But I stress this like I did last time: If you give this to any other artist in the industry; they could do it in their style, make it beautiful, and still put it out on time. Is it amazing how the blood splatters or you can see the individual hairs? Yes. But that shouldn't be the focus for McNiven on this entire story. He should be focusing just making the story look good; not prove that he has OCD. So while I can totally respect this book on an art level; and when I read this all together I will enjoy it more. Just the lateness and the unnessicary amount of detail makes me shake my head in frustration.
Will this read better in one sitting? On the art I can definitely say that will most likely be the case. As for the story, I can't see that happening. The finale for this storyline was just ultimately disappointing and when I read this from the first issue I bet I will get even more disappointed. Cause the first issue of this had so much potential but instead of trying to be something impressive. It just becomes another medicore Wolverine story. Also, to Mark Millar and Marvel. If you think I will pay good money to see a sequel to this then you will surely never see my money get into your hands.
Art: 3 - Good
I found the story to be EXACTLY what I expected/wanted it to be, so I would rate it a bit higher (a 3 maybe). I would certainly give the art a 5. I’d love to see him work on something like Batman & Robin.
@stuclach Now I am not sure I want Millar touching a DC book. Especially a Superman film.
Art: 3
you have no idea what you are talking about, you do?
@edward: Until you decide to be more respectful then I am not even going to respond to anything you say.
I’ve enjoyed parts of this series, but taken as a whole, it is definitely lacking. It sort of comes off as Wolverine-porn. I cracked up at the "I was dead, I got better." line, since Power Girl #4 used that as a ‘groaner’ last month.
McNiven sucks, he uses detail.
I figured the Hulks aren’t as strong as Big Daddy Bruce is cause they’re second gen Hulks, and most likely inbred as well. That’s sure to fuck you up on a genetic level.
HAHAHAHAHAHA, oh my God dude. You have GOT to drop the whole "I hate it because it’s late" philosophy crap. Even iFanboy doesn’t stand by that stupid policy anymore. You would have liked it better if it was put out on time?! That is exactly what you said in your review. It has nothing to do with the story.
You don’t know what you’re talking about, on a consistent basis.
@Kickass: High Five!
NextChamp based his rating of the art on the artists job as a whole. The job of the artist on a monthly book is to do quality work and meet a deadline. McNiven did quality work, and didn’t meet anything resembling a deadline. I know it was McNiven’s fault because it probably took Millar twenty minutes to write this entire arc. So i think the "3" is a perfectly valid rating, if you take that into consideration. Good review! I felt very similar.
