WOLVERINE FIRST CLASS #6

So Marvel needs to do books that are appropriate for kids, but are not written “down” to kids? Hey, Kirkman, pick up this book!

But you definitely don’t need to be a kid to enjoy this comic. In fact, I can’t help but feel like this was made specifically for me. Because I get the jokes that are playing off 1980’s X-Men tropes. But I’m laughing and also knowing that my kids are going to love this when they get it (but not ’til I’m done). Also, I’d like to applaud Van Lente for making some of his main characters not always no nice and good. In fact, there’s a surprising depth and complexity to the characters, even the ones that seem at first to be just taking up space. I may have even had a wet eye by the end.

The art does a good job of telling the story. The figures look natural and there are great expressions when there needs to be. This book is fun. There are laughs and action from cover to cover. If you like comics, give this a try.

On a totally unrelated note, I would like to point out that there is not a single ad in this book that isn’t for a Marvel comic-book or a Marvel comic-book-related product. Well maybe not the card game on the back page. But that’s it. This is… troubling. As much as I thought the car ads were pointless, it at least gave me hope.

Story: 4 - Very Good
Art: 3 - Good

  1. Fred Van Lente & Jeff Parker’s response to the Kirkman interview was, "We think ‘Walking Dead’ talks down to zombies."

  2. LOL! Are you serious? That’s awesome. See, now I think they are 2 of the best writers at Marvel. In the top 10, if not the top five. So are they sticking with kids books on purpose? And I know that using the term kids books kind of defeats what I’m saying, but you get my point. These are excellent writers and their material is accessible to anyone. Ron gets on his soapbox about Fear Agent, so I’m getting on mine about this. Buy this comics and read it and then give it to a kid. They will like you for it.

  3. I love that cover!  Can I pick up this issue and keep up?  I’m guessing yes, but maybe not…  Little Help?

  4. Oh yeah. These stories are more-or-less one and dones, self-contained. There’s been one 2-parter, issues 3 & 4, which I would recommend if you like this.

  5. Interview is here:

These guys are hilarious.  And I suspect they know they have a good niche with the all-ages line, not to say they don’t want to do other stuff.

  6. This review is really spot-on.  I never, ever thought I would like this — just another Marvel Money Maker, I thought.  But I was wrong, and it’s huge fun.

  7. Excellent review – I was going to write one myself, but it would be redundant after this.  Fred Van Lente is writing the best Wolverine on the stands, and it was delightful to see these young girls presented as fun, complicated characters.  They feel like young teenage girls, without the writing being condescending.  I couldn’t recommend this more highly.

  8. Wow!  Am I glad I read this review before I went to the store.  Thanks, this book was the best thing I read this week… hilarious.  It beat JSA and ASM… and they were both great.  Have I been missing out?  Should I go back issue diving, or was this a stand out issue?

  9. Overall, I think the series has been great. But I would say issues #2-4 are stand-outs, really good. #1 was good but not quite the same level. Same with #5.

  10. Kudos.  Great review.  I adore this book.  It’s funny and really written.  Who doesn’t love a dramatic build up only to have Logan simply destroy it in a matter of seconds?
