Meh. Maybe it’s just me, but this now feels like the cotton-candy of the X-Books.

When it launched, Wolverine and the X-Men was one of my favorite Marvel books. In a lot of ways, it felt like a companion book to Remender’s Uncanny X-Force, existing in the same moment & touching on the same characters and events, but delivering a bit of levity to counter-balance the grimness of X-Force.

Ever since Remender moved from X-Force to Uncanny Avengers, this book has felt like it’s lost its groove. It feels like it’s floundering, trying to get on track, but veering further and further away from what it was. It feels like I’m getting a lot of light and fluff, but with no substance to fill it out.

The art matches the book perfectly, and that isn’t a good thing. The straightforward, almost cartoony linework and coloring make the characters feel like bland, generic versions of themselves. I am not digging it.

It’s possible that my feelings on this issue are colored by the fact that I’ve had too little sleep and too much coffee, but I don’t think so. The slide to mediocrity feels like it has been happening ever since the Hellfire kids were introduced to the book.

I’ve waded through the introduction of Shark Girl, the Frankenstein arc, and the injection of Dog Logan, and it only feels like the water is getting higher and dirtier. I’m about ready to throw out my old soggy shoes and drop this title.
