A pattern is emerging. We have the cocky athlete (Kid Gladiator), the nerd (Broo); now we turn our attention to the delinquent, the Judd Nelson of the group, Mr. Quentin Quire. Cue Simple Minds.

It looks like we’re going to spend a lot of time with these kids — Quire is getting his own spinoff miniseries, after all — so it’s reassuring that, despite (or because of?) the worn high-school movie cliches, they’re fun to be around. I reserve judgment on whether Quire’s vanity and mischievousness will be annoying after a while, but for now, he’s a riot.

The book’s brisk pace and sense of fun is still going strong in this issue, and Chris Bachalo’s dynamic layouts and storytelling continue to impress — though in this issue he shares the stage with two other artists and seven (seven!) inkers. The page with Matt Murdock is an especially jarring change in tone, but for the most part these guys are on the same page. (I really liked the opening flashback, which I’m guessing is Duncan Rouleau’s work.)

  1. So Broo’s the nerd, KG’s the jock, Quire’s the outlaw, and Idie’s the basket case. Who’s the princess in this Breakfast Club? Deathbird? Krakoa? The Bamfs?
