I am a DC fan through and through and at the moment I only collect DC books (with the exception being The Walking Dead and The Infinite), so I want to take this opportunity to get something off my chest….

“Fuck you Marvel Comics!”

You see, in addition to being a die-hard DC fan, I am also a fan of comic books, and where there is a good story and fantastic art I’ll read it – take for instance Wolverine and The X-Men. I love the idea of Wolverine running a school for mutants (with a little help from his friends) and in two issues Jason Aaron has given us everything we want from comic books:

1. Solid characterization
Arron is staying true to the core essence of the characters he is writing, but did not create. The old adage “if it aint broke don’t fix it” comes to mind here. Wolverine, while not as iconic as Superman, is still a well known figure in the pop-culture landscape, but unlike what Geoff Johns has done to Superman and the other heroes in Justice League, Arron is giving us the classic Wolvie and still manages to make him fresh. I get that Marvel heroes have always been a little more “cooler” then DC ones, but having Superman and Green Lantern be dicks is not the way to make them more appealing to younger readers. Just tell a good story and stick to what made those heroes great in the first place and people will come and read it and like it. I did.

2. Perfect pacing.
Arron is wasting no time with pointless fights that take up 2 issues – instead we get a clever guided tour of the school and meet the principal characters. We are given information and get to know the attitudes and personalities of the cast right from the get go. This allows the reader to immediately feel they are invested in the story and not just here for the pretty art.

3. Pretty Art
Not that there is anything wrong with pretty art. Chris Bachalo’s style is prefect for this comic. It has a carefree, fun aspect to it which serves the story being told, but also carries with it an edge. That edge comes out to play during the stellar action scenes in both issues. Is it comic booky? Yeah, this is a comic book.

So fuck you Marvel comics. My budget is already stretched as it is, and now I have to add another title to my saver box at my local comic book store. And if the newly re-launched X-Men continues to be as good as that first issue was, well, there’s another title. And then I’ve heard good things about Daredevil and Ultimate Comic’s Spider-Man.

I’m screwed.

  1. I never have liked Wolverine, and he generally will make me NOT buy a book, but hot damn, is this book great.

You have my word that Daredevil is also fantastic. USM I couldn’t get into. Though, if you like this, you might like Avenging Spider-Man.

  2. Bachalo is still Bachalo. His self-indulgent style is still a major turnoff for me.
