Well, this is intriguing stuff.  I think this is the first of the new translated Humanoids material to hit the shelves (the rest is material that continues titles already published in English), and it's gorgeous. Written by David Munoz, who's worked with Guillermo Del Toro, the book is a ghost story set in post WW2 Czechoslovakia in what seems to be some kind of hospital or orphanage.  The principal character is orphaned Sarah, whose parents seem to have been killed by some kind of vampire, leaving her apparently infected along with the children of other such victims.  That's a lot of "seems" and "apparentlys" I know, but this first chapter is all about building a mystery.  All is not as it seems, and the adults running the facility clearly know more than they're telling the children. 

The writing is interesting enough, translated really smoothly and paced nicely.  The standout here though, as is typical with Humanoids books, is that art by Tirso.  I can't sing it's praises highly enough, and he's a talent I'd never heard of before.  It's detailed and tells the story brilliantly, paying attention to every exchange and incident.  It was a happy surprise to find that there were pages with very little speech, something that's not always the case with Euro translations, which allows Tirso to follow the always preferable "show don't tell" model of graphic storytelling.  There's a vibrancy and sense of motion that suggests storyboarding or really good animation, making every page a joy to behold.  The only downside I can see is that it suffers from the fact that the pages have had to be shrunk to fit the American format, which is a bit of a shame.

I hope people get to see this book and give it a shot.  I'm keen for Humanoids to succeed in the American/English language market this time, and with atmospheric books like this I feel they deserve to do so.  Give it a go, you won't be disappointed.
