When I saw the title on the iFanboy site, I assumed this was going to be The Flash version of Whatever Happened To The Man Of Tomorrow and Whatever Happened To The Caped Crusader, so I didn’t pull it.  But while setting up the racks for tomorrow, I found a couple copies, and thought I’d flip through it.

Wow.

The story centers on an average guy who has the ability to stop time.  No origin is given.  No reason.  It’s just something he can do.  So, when he learns that a huge bomb lurks in the center of London, and that scientists have concluded there is no way to stop it, and that it will destroy a two mile radius, the average guy decides to rescue the city of London himself by stopping time.

Marleen Lowe’s black and white landscape is incredible.  Every panel is worth pausing the reading and taking in as art.  And Dave West’s take on the protagonist is splendidly realistic.

I don’t imagine many LCSs will have very many copies of this book (we have two in the store I’m working in now), do yourself a favor and pick this up immediately.  It’s hands down the most interesting single issue take on special powers that I’ve read in ages.

Story: 5 - Excellent
Art: 5 - Excellent

  1. Reliably crazy Akamuu.

  2. Thanks Akamuu. Will check it out.

  3. Reliably trolly Kickass. Never anything of interest to say, just likes to bug people.

  4. It doesn’t have Marvel on the cover, so he’s not going to read it.

Akamuu – This looks fantastic. Is this part of a series of one shots, or is this just a totally singular story. Either way I’ll probably be reading it. Just need to track it down.

  5. @anson: I believe it’s just a one issue deal.  If you can’t find it, let me know.  I squirreled away an extra copy, and would be glad to send it your way.

  6. Akamuu, There is a prequel to the one shot that is being published in 8AM. It’s an anthology comic that will be sold at the Emerald City Comic Con in March. It’s being put out by TPB Press. A second printing of the book will be out in shops in late March or early April. Also, Dave West & Accent UK are planning on publishing a couple of different books with the same feel. Something about the invisible man, etc…

Great stuff. Mr. West is an incredible writer and Marleen’s art is just as good.

  7. Thanks for the kind words. It’s great that our book has made it across to the USA and is being enjoyed over there as well. As Doc Zane says, I’ve also written a prequel for the ‘8am’ anthology from TPB press, and will be making the trip over to the Emerald City Con this year to help at the TPB table. Hope to see you there.

As Doc Zane also says Whatever Happened To The World’s Fastest Man? is a stand alone story, but it is under the Blessed/Cursed imprint and there will be lose ties between most of the books under the imprint, well the ones I write anyway, that will build to a bigger story, but each can be read in isolation.

Our next Blessed / Cursed story will feature Kane Mesmer, the magician mentioned on the cover, and there is an Invisible man story as well as a Changeling story in the works.

Thanks again for the great review …

  8. @RedRobot: Sorry that I just saw this comment now.  I can’t wait to pick up the 8am anthology and any of further books in this series.  Sadly, I wasn’t able to make it to The Emerald City Con.  Hope you enjoyed it, and made a freightload of money and friends.

  9. Emerald City Con was great … never did quite get over the jeg lag but was still awake enough to enjoy myself .. I’ve written a short review on my blog over at http://strangestoftimes.blogspot.com/ and there’s a longer one on our website … http://www.accentukcomics.com/ just follow the EVENTS link and then the Latest Event write up.  I’d recommend the Emerald City Con …

  10. hmmm. … maybe I’m still not over the ‘jet lag’ as I’ve typed ‘jeg lag’ .. sigh …
