While Gail Simone’s “Blackest Night Suicide Squad” took a bunch of characters I wasn’t that familiar with, and weaved a story so good that I want to seek out her entire run on the series, Dan Didio’s “Blackest Night Weird Western Tales” makes me want to go out and read more Jonah Hex and Bat Lash written by other people.

Renato Arlem’s exquisitely pencilled and shaded art (I would love to see a black and white version of this book) is wasted on a flat, two-dimensional story.

I’m pretty certain this is the first title I’ve read that Didio penned, and I’m tempted to say as a writer he makes a pretty good editor.  But I’ve seen his decisions as an editor, and he’s not very good at that, either.

Story: 2 - Average
Art: 5 - Excellent
