Like most things involving comics, I hear about stuff kinda late. I first discovered Wednesday Comics on the second to last issue, but soon found out that it was going to be collected in book form and I was super excited. It wasn’t until i got my hands on this book did i truly understand what a special collection this truly was.

I’m extremely critical of comic art but looking through this book every page and every panel is top shelf. DC really pulled some of the most talented people working in the comics industry to reinterpret the comic strip for the 21st century. There is a huge variety in art styles and the editors did an amazing job of matching artist to character.

As an artist and graphic designer myself, I really appreciate the masterful logo treatments that each character was given. They are all compiled on the lovely duo toned endpapers as well as appearing on the masthead of every comic page. They were all fresh and exciting and referencing those characters classic logo designs and time periods from which they came from. Its refreshing to see iconic comic characters have well designed logo’s that weren’t run through the kitschy buzz saw known as photoshop.

DC has a wonderful track record of doing a great job with production values on its high end collected editions and this is no exception. Printed on a nice coated art book stock, the colors are deeper and more saturated than what we’d see in the original newsprint. Also there is incredible amounts of detail and crisp lines that again benefit from the nice paper. If I had to find a negative, the only one would be the size. Its a bit awkward to hold and read, but unlike an Absolute edition, its skinny enough to not cause you physical pain. Long after the weeklies have yellowed this book will endure. If you love comics, you owe it to yourself to pick this book up…Its going to be something you’ll want to keep on your shelf for a very long time.
