This project really is comics porn.  There are just so many good things to say, but let me  hit a few of the highlights:

Batman- Opening with the slow zoom-out of Batman with the listening device on the window is great touch.  The best panel, though, is the third-to-last, with a silhouetted Batman, a “slap” sound effect, and a dark, detailed fist in the foreground standing out against the silhouette.  So much storytelling in just a few images.

Deadman- I’m really digging the Darwyn Cooke-esque style, and now I can’t wait to see what’s happening with this story.  There’s obviously more going on than we or Brand realize, but the final panel makes me want to tune in again next week.

Superman- Not much has been said about this piece, but this is my favorite.  Not so much for the story, which seems like well-trod territory with nothing new offered so far.  The art, however, is just gorgeous, flat-out gorgeous.  The only Bermejo work I’ve seen is the “Joker” OGN he did with Azzarello, and this shows me that he can really draw to his subject matter and yet still retain a distinctive style.  But the coloring by Barbara Ciardo is the clincher.  From issue 1, the colors have been beautiful.  The sunset, the inside of the Kent homestead, all of it is just wonderful.  I look forward to this every week, and even if it were just the art I’d gravitate to it.  I wouldn’t mind having some of the originals of this.

Metamorpho- I don’t care that the plot hasn’t moved much, I could look at Allred’s art all day long.  Again, this could be silent and I wouldn’t give a crap.  The bottom “letters section” is just pure fun, too.

Supergirl- I would love to sit down and read this with my 5 year-old niece.  It’s cute, it’s extremely kid-friendly, and it’s another fun story.  I look forward to this one every week too.

Kamandi- as a snippet of Kamandi’s world, it definitely entices me into reading more.  Although I fear I’d be dissappointed in looking at Kirby’s original work after seeing Sook’s art (blasphemy, I know, but that’s how good Sook is).  It’s bright, colorful, and big.  Of all the comics, this one would fit the best in a traditional Sunday Comics section.

I don’t want to dwell too much on the down sides, as they’ve been hit quite frequently, namely Titans and Wonder Woman.  The Titans story is fine if you are a fan of the cartoon, as the art style is pretty near identical.  I’m not a fan, however.  Wonder Woman is just too darn crowded, and you can’t get a sense of detail on anything.  As a story, though, it’s the most advanced (but at near 20 panels a page it better be).  The other one I don’t like is the Adam Strange story.  This is really personal, as I’m just not a fan of the “Heavy Metal”-like art style, but if you like that style then you’ll love this.  Again, I do like the story, just not the art.

I love getting this every week, and while I wouldn’t want DC to continue this (the wallet couldn’t take it, and it would ruin the special nature of the project), I really, really hope that this could become a yearly tradition, possibly with a rotating cast of characters (like next time, doing stories with Green Arrow, JSA, JLA, and others).  I truly hope lots of you are reading this, because this is the kind of creative activity we need to encourage with our $$$ and our praise.
