Up to this point, I've been totally on board with War of Kings. The story has been logically consistent, moving, and action-packed. But with this issue, there were two major problems that could potentially hurt my overall appreciation of this series.
1) The Terrigen Bomb- so, basically, if the Inhumans hit the Shi'ar with Terrigen, they'll mutate and be like the Inhumans; therefore, they won't want to fight the Inhumans and Kree. And when Crystal calls Medusa on this, Medusa calls Crystal terribly naive; if everyone's the same genetically, they won't want to fight. Huh, wuh? News flash, humans are pretty o.k. with beating the crap out of each other, and their genetic similarity doesn't really matter much. Also, by dousing the Shi'ar with Terrigen, why would they become Inhumans and not Shi'ar with superpowers? Truthfully, wouldn't that just prolong the war AND give the Shi'ar a new advantage? This whole strategy makes no sense. But then it was invented by Maximus, so maybe he's got a bigger game going. Also, why would anyone assume that the Shi'ar would be happy about being mutated? Medusa seems to think that they'll be grateful and everyone will sing "Shiny Happy People." Hell, if that were the case, why haven't the X-Men just mutated every human and made them all the same? Lord knows there have been attempts, all of which failed miserably. Finally, how do the Inhumans know it will work? It hasn't worked on the Kree (a point that Ronan is very bitter about), and they are closer genetically to the Inhumans than the Shi'ar are.
2) The only way the bomb will explode is if Blackbolt is inside to detonate it with his voice. Again, huh, wuh? Why does he need to be personally present when the technology exists to store the power of his voice? This seemed a very contrived idea to up the ante on the impact of this story on the Marvel U, but we won't see how it plays out until next month.
The art was great as usual, and the other parts of the story were fine. The aftermath of Lilandra's assassination was a decent part of the book, but not as much as one might expect. But the two issues really hurt my enjoyment of the book this time out. Fortunately there's one issue left to redeem the overall story.
