With almost two weeks of the announcement that The Walking Dead would be a tv show for AMC; I still don’t believe it. I’ve always though when reading through the trades that this would be a great idea for a show (or maybe a set of films). I just never thought it could happen so quickly considering Kirkman is no where near done with this dark tale. But I’m all for this series for one reason only:

Robert Kirkman might have created the greatest zombie story ever.

I say this while reminding myself of George A. Romero’s brilliant ‘dead’ installments (yes, I’m including Land of the Dead) is sitting on my DVD shelf right now. But no man has made a more intriguing, terrifying, and deeply focusing tale that happens to have zombies roaming around the planet. All of the characters have a distinct voice and personality. You never get confused on who is who and you start to grow on some of the newer characters. I love the tough as nails former Sgt. name Abraham; he’s only been around (for my pacing at least) less then two trades and Kirkman has developed his character to be as important as Rick. Then there’s the scientist with Eugene Porter and he brings the questions anyone asks with zombies. He seems to know more then he’s letting on and it might be a swerve, but if it isn’t I hope Kirkman sheds some light with these creatures.

The only things I see on how a TV might not work is the insane amount of violence. I’m not sure AMC knows how crazy of a writer Kirkman can be. This trade probably has the sickest moment ever with the series and it involves Carl and a group of crazy drifters. I can’t wait to see how they are going to translate more of the fucked up moments of the series.

Reading this series in trade is so much more satisfying then issues. Yes I know Kirkman wants you to appreciate the art more; but it’s a quick read even if you appreciate the art. Don’t get me wrong, Charlie Adlard has always done fantastic work with this series. Especially a great sequence involving just hundreds of zombies chasing Rick and the others. But it’s a quick read and I wonder how the pacing of the TV series will be. But enough about the tv series, you should read this title. It’s a great horror comic and knowning what’s around the corner….It’s only going to get more fucked up. That just boggles my mind.

Story: 5 - Excellent
Art: 5 - Excellent
