This is the period where I thought this is where most people should get away from the trades. There is such a divide within the fanbase of this series: Those who read it in issues vs those who read it in trade only. I was the one who fell on the latter, thinking this definitely reads better in 6 issue bursts instead of waiting an issue a month. But after the 'Holy Shit!' moments in the previous trade, I thought this more then anything, was a great jumping on point for people to get off the trade.
Again after the 'Holy Shit!' moments that was the previous trade; we see Carl and Rick surviving on their own. This is where, I thought at first, the dynamic of the series was going to change. I didnt think Rick was going to die at any point yet, but Kirkman definitely seems to suddenly change who the focus of the series was. The moments were Carl is left defending on his own was nothing but tense and terrifying. But now that we know he can sort of be on his own, why continue with Rick? Then Kirkman decides to change back the status quo (or at least the 20th different status quo in this series) to where Rick is fine and almost everyone gets back together. In the end we see the three new characters join the team and suddenly; we're on our way to Washington D.C.
Here's my biggest problem with this arc, and let me first state that this is just as good as the previous 8 volumes. My problems with this arc is that; why did Kirkman suddenly decide that (almost) everyone survived the prision fiasco? This series could totally work now in the same vibe as Corman McCarthy's 'The Road'. Just a father and son surviving the apocolypse and maybe from time to time find live to interact with. I was so upset that in a couple of issues we went from only Carl and Rick surviving to then Michonne is alive, then they find a barn with a bunch of people still alive, then introduce even more characters...Bah! Those two to two 1/2 issues of just Carl and Rick were the highlight of this series. I was totally ready for a new dynamic for this series and then Kirkman decides 'oh let's just keep a good amount of Rick's friends alive' and move on to the next story.
Again I think this is a great series and I love these 50+ issues Kirkman has written so far. But after reading this trade (and remembering I forgot to get the issues after this trade...my bad) I've decided to go back into the trades. This series reads well in any format, but I'll take the huge amounts of dramatic and 'Holy Shit!' moments in book form then floppy form. Shame Kirkman didnt go all out in changing the dymanic of this series.
