After reading the last issue, and taking flack from a couple of people who think I should “stick to reviewing superhero comics”, I summed up my current opinion of The Walking Dead in a comment:

“I have found this series boring for quite a while.  It’s the same events on a loop.  The first, say, eight or nine trades were great, and unlike anything else being written in comics.  Now they’re like previous issues.

Is this the same trap superhero comics fall into?  Absolutely.  Still every once in a while a writer or artist steps in and shakes things up, and a series will be interesting for a while (a while varying from a couple off issues to a several years’ worth of issues).  Right now this series needs a huge shake up.  But with the way this comic is being written, that doesn’t seem like it’s going to happen.”

I still feel this way.  You can say all you want about tension, and character building, and how now the characters in a situation unlike any they’ve ever been before…but it’s not true.  They’re at that place where things feel safe, but there are still zombies out in the world, and Rick is going to play nice with the person in charge, but if things don’t go his way, he’s totally going to do whatever it takes to protect his people and etc. etc. ad infinitum.

I’m dropping this series.

  1. Nice, thoughtful review.

  2. Thanks, that is a much nicer comment than the one I got for my review of the last issue.  😉

  3. Enter the scorpion…

  4. Totally off subject. Do you collect any Vertigo titles? I assume you trade wait, but it would be a travesty if you didn’t read any.

  5. Don’t worry, I have my eyes closed.

  6. @vadamowens: I’ve been reading Unwritten, Air, Joe the Barbarian, Cinderella From Fabletown, and I was reading Sweet Tooth, but I’ve dropped that.  Doing Scalped and DMZ in trades.  How about you?

  7. @scropion lol

@akamuu I’m about to switch to trades with DMZ and Fables.  They’ve become rather dry of late.  Can’t quite pull the trigger on Scalped due to it’s recent step up in the level of stress for the reader.  I already started trade waiting on Sweet Tooth and am about to on Unwritten after #12.  I’m just gonna buy Joe when the HC comes out.  Never read Air though.  Heard it has a decent following though.
