UNKNOWN SOLDIER #5

This Vertigo title is shaping up very nicely by this fifth issue.  My one worry when it was first solicited was that it may go the way of some other Vertigo titles in the past, which is to insist on introducing some quasi-mystical element.  However, Dysart appears to be resolutely keeping this grounded in the reality of the Ugandan conflict and it’s all the more satisfying for that.  Already I’m invested in this new Unknown Soldier and his internal battles, and there seems to be a nice mystery brewing about just why Moses is hearing these voices.  I’m also intrigued by Agent Howl, the CIA man, who seems to be going through his own crisis of conscience on meeting Moses.

The artwork suits the storyline perfectly, it’s detailed and expressive, grim but capturing the natural beauty of Uganda at the same time.  I can’t remember where I’ve seen Pontecelli before, but he’s exactly what this title requires.

Everything’s building to a sixth issue climax of the opening arc (perfect for the trade).   All the characters are moving together for the finale, but there’s still lots of back history and ancillary charcters to keep this story moving forward nicely for some time to come.  In a week in which most of my books were superhero reads, this was a refreshing alternative.
