Gillen got me pulling X-Men with that fantastic Point 1 issue. The Breakworld arc that followed was very good, and the done-in-one 539 was really great.

This was…decent. I know it’s the first part of the arc, but it felt like a lot of set-up. I would have appreciated a tiny bit of explanation for Illyana’s incarceration.

Unfortunately, the shortcomings of the story were not offset by the art. I’m pretty neutral when it comes to Greg Land, but the work here is wildly inconsistent.

The first seven pages are great, and the second Juggernaut scene is really solid as well.

But the other scenes (which are primarily conversations, incidentally) vary from okay to awful. A few notables:

–Cyclops’ glasses make him look like an asshole.
–Kitty’s hairstyle gets a lot shaggier over the course of a couple panels.
–Emma has no hips in her first panel.

I can’t always tell which figures are referenced (or phototraced) but looking at this book, I get the feeling that Land is actually WORSE when he’s using reference.

I like the previous stories enough that I’ll stick this out, but I was hoping for a stronger start to this arc.

Story: 3 - Good
Art: 2 - Average
