This has everything you could possibly want in an X-Men comic: Wolverine pressuring Cyclops to talk about his feelings, Emma having dinner and flirting/being flirted with both Tony Stark AND Namor of Atlantis, Emma providing a psychic conduit between still-tubified-Kitty and Colossus so they can say 'I love you,' Hope wearing Jean's old jacket, a surprise appearance by Cecilia Reyes. . .
Okay, that may not be everything YOU want in an X-Men comic, but it's exactly the kind of story I've been wanting to read and haven't gotten that much of since early in Fraction's run on the book. The barrage of big events has finally slowed down, and the narrative doesn't have to tie itself in knots to explain the characters' behavior in other books (yeah, I blame everything on 'X-Force'), the story feels like it has some room to breathe. It also seems to be building to something -- Cyclops figuring out how he feels about everything that's happened, Hope taking her place in the world and Emma resolving some of the contradictions of her personal relationships. I particularly liked the contrast between her dinner with Tony (who she can tell isn't interested in her -- he just wants to talk about the damn Avengers -- and so is shamelessly flirtatious) , and with Namor (he clearly IS interested, so she holds him off).
Meanwhile she's unwilling to slow down and deal with Kitty; I think this is both because her own feelings about Kitty are difficult to resolve, and because she doesn't want to be faced with the relative simplicity of Kitty's relationship with Piotr. Kitty and Pete are in love and there is major obstacle keeping them apart, but it's an obvious obstacle and anybody has to figure they'll find a way out of it eventually . None of Emma's relationships are going to be this easy to fix.
This is a rambly sort of review, but that's the effect the book had on me. It made me stop and think about the characters and play around in my head with the storytelling ideas and possibilities.
The art by Whilce Portacio & Leonard Kirk (I'm not sure how they divided the duties) was not my favorite but the storytelling is solid.

This issue made me SO HAPPY. What you and I want from a comic book isn’t always the same, but in this case we’re on exactly the same page. I loved the contrast of Emma’s characterization with Tony and with Namor (and with Sebastian), and I adored the Kitty and Colossus scene. And of course the Scott and Logan scene was the highlight of the book for me — I hope we get more of their conversation and/or adventures next issue.
Plus, the plot with the new mutant was very well done, with great visuals for how his powers would work and a nice introduction to his characterization. Though as a new grad student, I’m concerned that all the emerging mutants are people who focus really intensely on their studies!
I heard everybody who goes into a pop culture studies program develops terrifying powers.
And oh, yeah, I totally forgot the Sebastian part of the story.
