It often feels like people aren't really talking about this book, and yet it's one of the biggest Marvel titles out there. Sure, there were a lot of raves about how great Second Coming is, and I know the Kitty return issue was even a POW, yet somehow this title and Fraction's work on it seem a little under the radar for such a big seller. Every month I read it though and I love it every time.
First, it's a real slow burn. There are familiar Fraction elements, such as attempting to turn superhero science into a reflection of real world science, along with edgy dialogue and a clear love of guys like Morrison and Ellis (not saying this is even the case, this is just what I often see). To me this is a soap opera, in that Fraction gives you snippets of each character and their story, along with how they relate to other characters. At times this can be frustrating seeming to only give you little bits of story every four weeks, but at the same time I really like the way everything slots together, and the world building Fraction does her really feels like a creation of substance. I always get a sense of a bigger picture and that every detail is important to him. I also love the characters he's chosen to focus on and he gives them all their own voice.
The main focus here is Hope and her quest to find some truths about her origin. This brings some funny exchanges (Hope packing equipment for every eventuality the way Cable taught her, Cyclops pointing out that may not be entirely necessary in today's Alaska), some thoughtful and emotional moments and some interesting hints at the character's full potential. It's a simple story in a way, but nothing is wasted and nor does it dwell unnecessarily long on this storyline, gearing us up right away for the next chapter in the 5 Lights storyline.
The art I'm less keen on, and it seems a shame that Portacio never seems to be as good as I once thought he was back in the heady 90s days of X-Factor. It's passable and there are flashes of quality, but I'm afraid I just end up wishing cover artist Terry Dodson was doing interiors too.
The back up story is more character work, focussing primarily on Cyke, Magneto and Wolverine. It's well written and begins to address the interesting issue of whether Wiccan and Speed might truthfully be related to Magnus. The main draw though has to be the Coipel art which is gobsmackingly great, as we've come to expect. All in all, a really enjoyable issue in what I believe is an excellent run.
Art: 4 - Very Good
Anyone remember Sting, or Peter Stanchek, from the Valiant company’s "Harbinger" comics? Sting had the power to awaken mutant or harbinger powers just like Hope.
