This issue is such a relief after the Dark Avengers/X-Men crossover.  I suspect Fraction did not do his best work on that story arc because he was hemmed in by editorial considerations.  He had to get certain characters, like Dani Moonstar, to certain points in their development so they could be used in other titles.  With this issue, Fraction appears freer to take his own direction.  I like the way Cyclop’s character is being deepened from a boy scout to a strategist and leader.  Emma is being portrayed realistically as being under a great deal of stress due to her sequestering a piece of the Void in her mind.  Emma clashes again with one of her usual antagonists on the team, Storm.  Plots and subplots with potential are beginning to take shape.  Villians, who I believe are new, are introduced at the beginning of the story, and an old foe appears at the end.  I liked the “speak of the devil” irony at the end of the comic when Emma explains that she is containing a splinter of poor evil and the old nemesis reappears.  I suppose I am the exception in always enjoying the work of Greg Land.  He does make the mayor of San Francisco look like she is 23 though, which seems unlikely.
