Visually, and plot wise, this is the most dynamic of The X-books.  It’s really a shame that Marvel decided to slap the Astonishing title on Ellis’s run, and have this as Uncanny, as Fraction’s work is much more in the vein of Whedon’s run than the current Astonishing storyline.

Fraction shows a love and understanding of these characters that the other titles are currently lacking (ok, Carey may actually love the characters he’s writing, but he doesn’t seem to understand them very well).  Every conversation and interaction is crucial to the story without it feeling too dense.  And Greg Land is drawing the best mainstream Marvel characters out there, right now.  Regal Beast, stunning Northstar, gorgeous Cukoos.  The panel showing Colossus in the stadium at a Raider’s game is phefuckennomenal.  This creative team is absolutely killing it with this title, and I’m loving every panel.

Story: 4 - Very Good
Art: 5 - Excellent

  1. @ludusmaximus –

How did you come up with this? It’s awesome. I don’t mind an artist mixing reality, pop culture, and art, but this seems to have gone too far.

  2. I just found the blog where the guy had this stuff.  It’s all over the net, search Greg Land tracing in google

  3. That really sucks.

  4. After looking at these links…..Greg Land needs to get fired.

  5. I could care less about the fact that he traces. That may (okay…"does") make him less of an artist, but it doesn’t really effect my appreciation of how the art makes me feel or how it communicates the story. Personally I think the complaints about how Land draws everyone with "porn face", has a very limited set repetoire of facial expressions, and draws very static settings in instances where the scenes should look more dynamic…those are all more important to me when evaluating Uncanny X-Men itself. The fact that he traces is, of course, a huge part of how someone should evaluate Greg Land. But I don’t care to evaluate Land so much as I do to evaluate (and hopefully appreciate and enjoy) the title he’s working on. In other words, the fact that so much of the art is traced only becomes a problem for me if someone points it out to me and forces me to focus on it.

  6. Ok, I have a friend in the comic industry who makes a lot her money by doing rotoscpong, and "tracing", and I tease her about it immensely.  It takes a lot of patience, and time.  What it doesn’t take?  Innovation and talent.  This issue is fabulous looking, but, I think you’re right, it’s not really art.

Dave Mack got a lot of shit for "recycling" during a new Avengers title a couple of years ago.  The website you linked to shows that Mack ain’t got nothing on Land when it comes to a lack of innovation.  I’m embarrassed for him.  But, if he can sleep at night, knowing he’s just a photoshopper, as opposed to an artist, then I can sleep at night looking at his comics.

Now when will someone devcote a website to how Claremont has been recycling his stories for 30 years?
