For all intent and purposes, Jeph Loeb will still be one of my all time favorite writers. It's because his past writings have made me happier then a little girl. His works like Long Halloween, Challengers of the Unknown, the early Superman/Batman issues, and his color series for Marvel have all been really enjoyable to read. So take this sentence with a grain of salt because we all seem to hate Loeb because of the descent in quality his works have become. But if we all look into the past I'm sure we can all agree that at one point the words Loeb and Great Comics have been together at one point.
Having said all that, once again Loeb has brought us more **** for the Ultimate line. His last work on Ultimates 3 was really just a god awful mess and it feels like the Devil has come and made us all want to cry blood. Now he is expecting us to believe an event titles, coming out of U3, will be any good? There is no fun times in this issue, none. The majority of the characters are once again written out of character and bad jokes litter every other page. Once we get into the 'Day After Tomorrow' rip off scenes it just is litter with anti-climatic moments and it's just poor in comparison to other events. Although I must admit Loeb does have a nice handle of the FF, but since this is the first issue it's hard to say what could happen in a Loeb book. For all we know the second issue could have them turn into bunnies or just have a bloody free for all.
Because I like to think subconciously that Loeb knows his stories are ****, he gets the best artists to do his stories. Finch is more then capable to draw this event and it is the only saving grace here. The characters are handled nicely, although the faces tend to be a bit iffy. Once we get into the destruction of NYC, it's handled beautifully. Especially when we see Sue try and make the water go away. It's sad to think that these great talents like Finch, or McGuiness, or even Frank 'I only get paid well to draw sexy ladies' Cho are forced to work with such a shotty writer. But at least there is some entertainment there.
Every time I pick up a Loeb title I sallow my tonsiels and hope that it's readable. Sadly 99.9% of the time now I just cant read his stuff anymore. I know he's got his team up with Tim Sale soon (Captain America: White) and that zero issue was pretty good. But to me this is certainly the last straw. I cannot allow myself to pick up anything by this man anymore, at least until he gets hit **** together. Marvel really needs to think if it's really worth it keeping this man as a writer anymore. Cause I dont know about Joey Q, but I would be pissed that most of this guy's work has been critcally reviewed as some of the worse comics out today.
*P.S.: Benis should punch Loeb in the face for ruining his recent USM arc in one damn panel in this issue. So for anyone who wants to pick this up and regularly reads USM....Be warned.*
Art: 4 - Very Good
It’s the 4th most pulled book on iFanboy… I doubt Mr. Q is dissapointed. Loeb got you to buy the book even though you dislike his writing. Don’t you think thats saying something?
@Ruo21: Yes it does says something, but I said it in my review that this is 100% the final thing I will buy from Loeb. No more Ultimates, no Hulk, sad to say no Tim Sale team up either….It’s done, and even if it’s the most pulled book and it gets a lot of money, Marvel should care about the quality of their titles and not just the money.
Damn Capitalist state.
I buy so I can write these silly reviews, tee hee.
Dude, this thing was way better than you are giving it here. It may suck in the next few issues, but this was a good start to an arc. Seriously, is there anything out there you don’t hate–I’m really not trying to be a dick. Just seems like you have a lot of anger.
I would gurantee that Loeb does notsecretly think his stuff is crap [Because I like to think subconciously that Loeb knows his stories are ****]. Loeb, I would guess, thinks he is telling a good story. He gets good artists because he has the cred to demand them. I didn’t like Ultimates 3 either, but you have to judge this on its own merits and this was good for a first issue.
@SteveM: Your not being a dick, but I still wrote this for the issue and not Loeb’s lack of entertainment these last couple of years. I thought the characterisations were bad, the pacing felt off, and overall he tend to go for more jokes then actual drama. If you liked the issue that is fine, I’m sure there are a ton of people that will say the opposite of what I say.
But to me, like Hulk and Ultimates 3, this was just a huge waste of time.
