Well, the last week in November will officially be know as “Started Collecting Marvel Comics Again” week.

I’m such a comics nerd I can’t go one week without reading something new, and with DC not putting out anything that I normally collect, I had to resort to reading Marvel.

I have never read The Ultimates before. Never. I know absolutely jack shit about the storyline. I do however know the characters and the premise behind the the Ultimate Universe – sorta like a alternate reality for the Marvel Universe where their characters are the same in name but completely different in origins and personalities and stuff (DC is trying something like this with their Earth One books. Still waiting on the Geoff Johns Batman: Earth One book)

So yeah, I decided to give it a shot and glad I did. after reading this issue I immediately read the first 3 and loved them all.

The hyper-realism of the art and story make this comic a very suspenseful read and you feel like the stakes are high enough that these heroes just might not make it out of this alive.

There are times when I have a problem with comics mimicking movies – in fact I really hate it – but here it seems to work. This feels like a blockbuster event that can only seen in this format. A special screening only for comic book dorks – like myself.

I do have some catching up to do with the story and some of the characters (like what’s up with the reveal on the last page? How did this person get that way? What’s the story behind that?) but luckily characters like Iron Man and Thor seem to be pretty close to their Marvel Universe Proper counterparts, so I know where they are coming from.

And then of course Sam Jackson IS Nick Fury.

  1. Nice review good to know this works for new readers because I’ve been reading Ultimate marvel for almost 3 years now so I really had no idea if this was new reader friendly or not. As far as what happened to the character at the end of this issue go pick up the Ultimate Doomsday series by Brain Bendis from last year, it’s fantastic! Pretty sure you can get it digitally but if not I got mine on amazon http://www.amazon.com/Ultimate-Comics-Doomsday-Michael-Bendis/dp/0785147772/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1322924116&sr=8-1
