A great place to start this review is with the cover art. Its simple, sleek, it conveys action and it represents a ton of stories in a single image. In the foreground, as you can see, there is a close up of the title characters’ hand slinging web and primed to swing through NYC. The more impressive element of the cover is in the background. There you see an apartment building with a fire escape. In the windows and on the fire escape you see an old lady yelling at a neighbor, two men fist fighting, a shoot out between criminals and a SWAT team, a BBQ pit smoking, a young boy hanging on for dear life with another young boy in a cape trying to save him, and a few rubber neckers with their heads out the window. This one image begs the question, “Where is Spider-Man going that’s more important then all the crazy stuff in the background?”
You get an answer when you open the book and the first thing you see is an alternate (or is it Ultimate?) cover for ULTIMATE AMAZING FANTASY #14. It’s a captivating image for a fictional comic book from the fictional creators: Finklestien, Strong, and Lioka. You see Bombshell, a new character to the series, attacking a very Scarface looking Nick Fury. It’s fun and exciting even if it has next to nothing to do with the story inside. Both covers highlight the mastery of regular series artist Dave Marquez. He started as a fill in artist for Sara Pichelli and now I wouldn’t want anyone other then Marquez drawing this book.
As for the story inside, you get a little background on Bombshell and the evil Roxxon Corporation, a little aside with Cloak and Dagger, and a lot of action featuring Spider-Man, Spider-Woman, and Bombshell. It all seems to set up an epic teenage super team, led by Spider-Man, and hell bent on taking down a vile company who experimented on children and subsequently ruined the lives of those children. Of course, Roxxon has its own ideas about how to handle these kids. Namely, a new villain named Taskmaster.
One of the highlights of this issue was when Spider-Man attempted to web Bombshell and missed! You see the webbing just “thwip” right by Bombshell and it reminds you that Miles Morales is still new to this whole Spider-Man thing. In a lot of ways that’s comforting to the reader. Unlike some comics or heroes its not a given that Miles will win. In fact, many times in the series Miles has out right failed. He has been unable to save his uncle or mother previously. Who knows who will fall next? That uncertainty gives added weight to the decisions Miles makes and the possible repercussions of those decisions.
This is a consistently well produced book. In many ways it’s a counter-point to a lot of Fan boy gripes. Want more realistic female characters? Read this. Want more diversity in comic books (this issue alone features a black hero, an inter-racial hero, and a black villain)? Read this. Want comics with actual consequences for its characters? Read this. Want consistency in your writing and art? Read this. Of course, if all you want is fun, excitement, and killer comic bookery? READ THIS.
