If I really wanted to look at Spider-Manga, I would buy some.  I know it’s out there.  But I don’t want spider-manga, I want Ultimate Spiderman.  And, while I’m getting a pretty solid Ultimate Spiderman story, I’m getting the artwork for a thirteen year old’s Magic Girl story.  When did Gwen Stacy become a blond haired Japanese girl?    When did MJ become the glum shutterbug stereotype from anime (ok, I’m only 2/3rds of the way through my Ultimate Spiderman trade collection, so it’s entirely possible that that’s just a plot point I haven’t reached yet)?  And Peter?  Ok, I know he’s always looked like an emo twerp.  It’s part of his charm.  But I strongly dislike the way he’s being drawn in this comic.  The hair is stupid.  And the panel where he kisses Gwen is straight out of…some manga book that I don’t read.

If I could remove my knowledge that this artist clearly shows a lot of talent, I would give the art on this book a one.  I hate it.  But, I acknowledge that it’s a personal preference, and not the work of “a bad artist”.

That said, if this art doesn’t radically shift after this story arc, I’m probably going to drop the book.  Peter Parker looks like the artsy lesbian I used to sit next to in English class.  And, while I liked her, and would completely respect her if she put on red and blue tights and fought crime, I would not be comfortable calling her Peter Parker.

It’s a shame because, story-wise, these first two issues have me sailing through my Ultimate Spidey trades to play catch-up (way less messier than playing catsup)..

Story: 4 - Very Good
Art: 3 - Good

  1. Now that’s what I call a review.

  2. By manga you mean hentai right?

  3. LMAO TNC.

    No no, Akamuu you are right. This is an inappropriate use of this style. Bagley please. No you know who’d belong here? Probably Bachalo.

    Hm… wait… didn’t Bachalo screw up…ermImean draw Ultimate X-men at some point?

    At anyrate I am on the verge of actually dropping Ultimate Spider-man… I know… me, the #1 fan of it… the art doesn’t excuse the price…

  4. Second to last paragraph in the review=awesome

  5. Ha – good luck with the next issue! I’ll be rooting for a change in art for you (and me)

  6. I agree whole-heartedly–the art in general isn’t bugging me as much as the depictions of the main characters.  They’re just not the same people they were, especially Peter Parker, whose hair looks ridiculous and is almost as distracting as Lana’s when she turned up on Smallville last season.

  7. @TNC: If it doesn’t have tentacle rape or bukkake, I won’t read it!

    @mangaman: Bachalo has been getting steadily better over the years.  I remember hating his arc onMorrison’s New X-Men, and being indifferent to his art for a while and then it just sort of clicked for me.  His Amazing Spiderman was…uhhh…amazing.  And his layout/art on Sinister Spiderman is what drew me into the series.  I think he’d do great with Ultimate Spidey.  Bagley would be great on Ultimate Spidey if he wasn’t trying to draw manga.  Manga is a very specific art and there are places it works, and places it doesn’t.  And it just doesn’t work here.

    @MisterJ, and jabroniunc: Thanks.

    @bansidhewail: Nail.  Head.  You hit.  Win prize.
